Well, if you don't want your wife and/or kids to kill you, don't beat them. It's pretty easy to figure out.

I'm not a good one to answer your question, for I feel that anyone that would abuse their spouse or children (or parents) deserves to die at their hand in a very painful way, to make them live some of the pain they caused. But I also think that violence is an excellent motivator of people. . .

Depending upon the severity, frequency, and/or nature of said DV, use of deadly force may not only be just, but warranted.

I could do it. Claim post traumatic stress disorder and be out in 2 years. (It'd be worth doing the time if it happened to me.)
