In California, there's a species of vernal pool fairy shrimp that are endangered.
The problem is habitat loss. A vernal pool looks a lot like a part-time puddle, and so these get filled in and built on, and no one notices that there were tiny freshwater shrimp (cousins of "sea monkeys") living in them.
