Yep, the rising sun. Pre World War II, the flag looked more like a rising sun.

We call it æ¥ç« æ (Nisshouki) or æ¥ã®ä¸¸ (Hinomaru). Nisshouki means "sun flag" and Hinomaru means "sun disc/circle". I hope that helped you out!
