Yep, the rising sun. Pre World War II, the flag looked more like a rising sun.

We call it 日章旗 (Nisshouki) or 日の丸 (Hinomaru). Nisshouki means "sun flag" and Hinomaru means "sun disc/circle". I hope that helped you out!
