Only if you use a boarding kennel or dog sitter. I would encourage an adult or older pup, never a puppy for this situation.

I would say no to that... puppy or older dog. When you get a dog they need a lot of attention, you need to get to know the dog and the other way around too. Not to mention the fresh water and food they'd really appreciate every day. What if it gets sick when you're not there? I'd say the only option would be if you could take the dog with you on your travels, but even then, to bring a new dog into a new job is almost asking for some possibly challenging situations. Good luck but I'd wait with that one if I were you..

It would be really unfair to have a dog if you cannot look after it. Where would it be when you are away? If you were just going to be out at work during the day you could perhaps employ a dog walker to help out but being away so much would be confusing for the dog because who would it associate as it's master? You certainly could not leave it alone so you may have to do without unless your travelling would allow the dog to come with you. This could work for older dogs but I am not sure that a puppy would be any good as a work companion.
I really want a dog again - my ex got our dogs when we split as my new house was unsuitable - but sadly I work 9.00-5.30 plus travel time and that is just too long for a dog to be on it's own.

If you're willing to really put a lot of thought, planning, and effort into it, it is possible. (Depending on what kind of work you do.)
If you fly and stay in hotels and go to meetings, etc. you could probably adopt a very small, extremely easygoing adult. You would have to find airlines that allow you to take the dog in a small carrier with you onto the airplane as carry-on luggage, not as cargo. Then you have to find hotels that allow pets. You have to walk the dog and spend time with him while you are there the same as you do when you are at home. You have to ensure that the dog is secure when you leave the hotel room so that staff neither hurts him, lets him out, or gets bitten.
It's not easy, but it's possible.

You need a roommate or a battery-powered dog. Sorry, all pooches are social, and would be miserable with that schedule.
If you travel less someday, coming home after work to the wagging tail is VERY rewarding, but 9-5 is about how long a crate-trained dog will last :(

I agree with the others. That's too long to be away from a dog. Doggie daycare/boarding might be a solution, and I liked the suggestion of an older dog. Maybe one who is at a shelter. That way even 1/2 your time is better than no time at all.

Really not fair to the dog. Wait until your life settles down and then get a nice dog as a pet. Taking care of a dog properly takes time you don't seem to have now.

Dogs are like children. If you want to have a strong bond with your pet you need to spend time with it. Puppies require alot of extra attention. It will be harder to train your dog if you're away alot. I would hold off on the dog until you have more time at home.

I don't think that is feasible - sorry. Dogs are like kids, in a way. They require a lot of attention. I don't think now is a good time for you to have a dog unless you know someone who can care for your pet (walk, feed, love) or unless you are willing to pay for a pet sitter when you are out.

Unless you have someone you could share the dog with, it sounds like a miserable life for the little fellow. Dogs are very social.
