I know someone that had re-enlisted in the Navy , went on leave then went back with a dirty ua. Said he got a honorable discharge. I know he owes the money back to them but has not done so. I know they called him asking him for some arrangments that he could not make. Sometimes I wonder if this isn't why he moves around from job to job all the time. Do you know if they will come looking for him and if so what happens then? It was something like 14,000.I don't know if that is with interest or what he recieved. He says nothing will happen. I myself, I don't think this is right he needs the money back to the Navy, and I don't think someone should get a honorable. I believe he was dismissed 3 years ago.Would this be like desertiion? Could he spend time in the brig? Do I need to call authorities about him? Any help you can suggest is appreciated.

being former military myself i can tell you it was up to his command as to the type of discharge he recieved if he did not do any brig time as far as the money issue that was probably a re-enlistment bonus which he received some upfront and the rest over the course of his enlistment. how much he owes is what ever he received upfront i would assume the would turn him over to collections and take his tax returns or garnish his wages but as for coming to get him I don't think they will(they could, you never know what the government is thinking lol) and if he did recieve an honorable discharge then he is not a deserter he was released of his contract as a result of his drug use (now a days they are giving out other than honorable discharges for drug use). I hope this answers your questions

This is so screwed up and it makes no sense. He couldn't owe for a bonus unless they really have you and it is paid in increments most of the time. He was reupping right? So no way no how he got an honorable no matter how you cut it. Something is wrong on so many levels and he is lying to you about something. He went AWOL or got kicked out. Either way, boyfriend or not something is wrong. Step away and don't be naive. He is in trouble or is trouble. If he really was upstanding he would go talk to someone about it and clear things up..... one way or another. They go a lot easier if you do this and if he is seriously upstanding he would do so. But I suppose if you suggested this there would be an excuse of some sort. Bottom line...... he's lying to you.

Hmm, from the term dirty ua, I can assume he was positive for drugs. Yes they will get the money from him, first they'll pass it to collections company, if that doesn't work they use the IRS to take it out of his taxes, they can get a court order to garnish his wages too. It would be in his best interest to talk and make arrangements for payment, if it hasn't yet, it will show up on his credit report.

I'd guess he got an Other Than Honorable Discharge, or Dishonorable. It sounds like he owes them for an enlistment bonus of some sort. In that case, it will be treated like any other debt to the government.

I believe it's 40 lashes and loss of 5 points. Just kidding! The I.R.S. will keep his tax returns for the next 200 years. His pay might also be garnished and his credit will be crap forever. I don't think they're come looking for him, the Navy is kind of busy right now, but he will start to lose a lot of sleep soon.
One more thing, I hope you are not thinking of marrying this guy. You may be in love, but you don't want your finances attached to his. He is in a hole don't let him pull you in too. Good Luck.

Nobody is going to get an 'honorable discharge' if they are kicked out for drug use.

The IRS will collect the money.

If he owes/d money - they will get their money back. Trust me.

By the way, if this is a boyfriend, dump him. He's not living up to his responsibilites (by doing drugs while in the service) and by not paying it back.
