is it possible to make oneself lactose intolerant? i used to be able to drink milk, eat yogurt, etc with no probs. i can eat/drink a little bit but if i have more than a small portion it kicks in. Now it makes my stomach upset and kinda bloated. Im in my mid-20s, so does age effect anything?

For me, it just keeps getting worse and worse. I hear this is typical as people age.

Almost everyone is able to digest lactose in infancy, but as we age it becomes more common to be unable to digest lactose. The cells lining the small intestine need to be able to produce lactase, an enzyme needed to split the undigestable lactose molecule into glucose and galactose. Otherwise the bacteria in your large intestine would feast on the undigested lactose and cause your bloating, gas and diarrhea.

Also, after an acute bout of gastroenteritis, a person can become temporarily lactose intolerant until the intestinal lining recovers. It is wise to avoid dairy for up to a week after you've had an intestinal virus.

Its random. I used to drink tall glasses of milk but when I got into my 20's, a glass of milk will serve as a sort of laxative. 25 years later I'm still lactose intolerant. I have to take lactaid pills or drink lactaid milk. Same thing with shrimp. I dont know if the condition is relative but on or about the same time I used to eat shrimp fried rice and fried shrimp with french fries. Suddenly in my 20's it cause me to puke repeatedly. Regardless of how or where I ate it. I still have this problem. And I dont know of medication or pills that will help my body not to reject it.

Good Luck

90 % of people eventually become lactose intolerant in life because mammals such as humans are not supposed to ingest lactose (actually galactose) after weaning

Cow Milking and Drinking Milk and the Four Food Groups (Milk Group) was just a way to get people to spend money on Milk and Milk products ( a marketing Ploy by US Government - Department of Agriculture during the depression to generate Farm Income)

Milk is really not necessary, you can get all the calcium and protein you need from other foods

After I got Crohn's disease I became lactose intolerant. I can only eat really small amounts without being really bothered. It is frustrating, I know Lactaid has some pills that you can take and be able to eat/drink dairy, I have not tried them yet so I can't comment on them.

Everyone is lactose intolerant to some degree and it naturally
worsens as your body objects to being poisoned.
