My father in law gave us an '88 Volvo that he never had the title for. He has since passed away and we would like to sell the car, since we have never used it. How in the world are we to find out who held the title and/or get a copy of it. He gave us the car around 3 years ago. Or,do we even need the title, can we just sell it or scrap it for money?

I would try to go to wherever it is you get your license plates (the car's plates are up to date, yes?) . They should have a record of the car being titled in your state, and should be able to issue a new one.

You'll probably have to pay a fee of some sort, but it's hard (if not impossible) to sell a car without a title.

If the Volvo runs fine, you shouldn't have a problem selling it, they have a rep of being reliable. You can also donate it to a charity, but again, you'd need the title.

First you must document how you got the car. Next you need to go to the DMV with the VIN and License number (if any). You will be required to make a sworn statement of facts, and pay the appropriate fees. The fees could be substantial if the car was not registered and the previous owner did not file for non-operation status. They will issue a temporary operating certificate and after a title search will issue a title. Sometimes in these cases, it is cheaper to part the car out and then dispose of the remains at a salvage yard.

if you just sell it for scrap you don't need a title.check with your local dmv for regulations in your state.
