plain and simple, im shy so i need some less obvious ways find out if this chick likes me. basically a way to beat around the bush, so i can remain friends if she doesnt like me...

just get to know her and talk to her more...if she gets excited or interested in what you have to say, she is probably attracted to you in some way....you have to get to know someone before they can start to like you.

Fun stuff this,
First watch the smiles if she smiles at you when she isn't smiling at other people you are on the up and up my friend.
Secondly touching is an easy way to gauge intimacy comfort. I don't mean just go off and grab her but hug a bit more. Touch a bit more do things like take her hand and run at some cool thing. If she starts giggling and runs too then I'd say your in :)
Lastly and my preferred method is to do this line of statement / question:
Me: I think I have an issue and I'm not sure what to do about it.
Them: What's the issue?
Me: Well I'm starting to notice I have some new desires and I think they may be of a romantic nature but I'm still a bit confused."
Them: Well we are friends
or
Them: Oh yeah?
First one friends second one not friends ;)

Number one subtle is for WUSS BAGS, and quite frankly WUSS BAGS never get any. But try this if you must (works best if you don't know each other really well but even if you are acquainted) The next time you see her look her straight in the eye's and smile, and for the love of Pete don't break eye contact before she does. If she smiles and then looks away wait a few moments and do it again if she smiles back again get over there and start talking(be confidant and flirty). If she stairs you down or doesn't smile then I'm afraid you loose :(

When you are talking to her does she play with her hair?
When you are talking to her, watch her body, is she copying you? if you touch your face does she touch her face, if you touch your hip does she?
Do her toes point toward you?
That is as subtle as it gets. Ultimately you need to just ask her out.
