There is medication for people who are bipolar. If he is already on meds., then his dosage needs to be checked. Since he is approaching puberty he is probably experiencing some changes. He may need to be hospitalized for a few days to check his dosage and get it right.

In my area there are places children can go after school for a day care type of thing. But it's for children with these types of disorders. I have bipolar disorder and growing up isn't the answer. I'm grown and it still gets to me. I also have PTSD. You don't just wake up one day and say "hm...I want to be better" Well, maybe you do think that, but it doesn't happen.

It's hard because it sounds like she's the only one taking care of this child. How about boys and girls club? I don't know if they'd be prepared for him though. Is he on medication? Bipolar disorder isn't a disorder that you can fix with out medical and emotional help.

I'd like to suggest [if not already being done] family and personal counseling not only for the child but the mother too. OR she can take a parenting class. They may be able to help her.

They will give her wonderful ideas. My son had some "issues" when he was younger, trust me if it's not dealt with now, it's going to get worse.

Love that child, and the rest too of course. Please try to be gentle and caring. I'm sure this is being done since you are showing concern.

I hate to see things like this because it really is hard. Good luck to all involved!!!

Her son should be seeing a psychiatrist. There's medication that will prevent the drastic swings associated with bipolar discoder. Until his illness is under control, she should speak with her supervisors about her sons condition. They are legally required to allow her time to deal with family medical emergencies (according to the Family Medical Leave Act - FMLA). Her HR department should be able to advise her.

But she will need to do whatever she can to get her son's disorder under control, for his sake as well as hers.

Good luck!

has she tried using medications to help calm him down so that she could spend time with her other children or find help. Is there other family members that can help her out? a retired grandparent and can pick up the bipolar child and be able to handle him? We have a few bipolar members in our family and we all take turns watching out for them with helps. Medications also helps regulat theirs moods so that they can pretty much take care of themselves.

She really should not be trying to deal with her son's illness on her own. He should be in therapy where a trained doctor will be assisting him with his mood swings and helping him to cope, adjust, and function in society with a healthy emotional attitude. Also, there are medications such as Paxil that help with manic-depressive episodes that those with bi-polar experience. Bi-polar is not something that is easliy dealt if left untreated. Good luck!

I GREW UP WITH A SISTER WHO WAS BIPOLAR. SHE WOULD BEHAVE WORSE WHEN SHE THOUGHT SHE CONTROLLED MY MOM., BUT WHEN MY MOM STOPPED GIVING IN AND TRIED TOUGH LOVE SHE ACTED BETTER. WE ALL WENT TO COUNSELING AND MY SISTER WAS PUT ON MEDICINE THAT HELPED HER. SHE IS NOW GROWN UP AND STILL IS ON MEDS BUT DOES REAL GOOD. I AM ACTUALLY PROUD OF HER. I HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE AND I HOPE YOU ALL THE BEST.
