So as usual we're hearing about women in Islam having no rights. So women have equality in the West then huh? I ask you this then.....do MEN? Women go to the office wearing trouser suits, or if they feel like showing their legs, they can wear a skirt & jacket. Can men go to work in the office in a jacket & a pair of shorts? Why not? Isn't that unfair? Where the equality? My point is, men & women are different. they have different rights & duties. Women can bear children, & men can't. How can two people who are different be the same, or equal? Why can't they have differences & why is it seen as negative that women are asked to cover up? Men by nature are visually stimulated, women are not. If a woman covers herself, and only allows close male family members & other women to see her beauty, why is that considered strange? Surely it is HER "right" who can see her beauty & who cannot?

Big Pen - In Islam 4 witnesses are required to accuse a woman of adultery. That is to prevent a chaste woman being wrongly accused. The ludicrous law in Pakistan we keep hearing about is backward, & NOTHING to do with Islam.

Keep speaking sister
You are making your points known and your message be heard
Personally, I respect my wife for covering herself out in public. She dresses always in nice clothes- just modest.
It's a culture thing- they grow up with naked women all over the television and walking all over the street. It's differ ant culture that is all sister.
I would not want my wife or my daughters to be seen as sexual objects by men. People forget- Muslim men also dress modest.
If I was on Level 2 I'd give you a 'Thumbs Up'
Peace and blessings be with you dear sister. -

>> Men by nature are visually stimulated, women are not
Proof?
>> If a woman covers herself, and only allows close male family members & other women to see her beauty, why is that considered strange?
Yeah, here's the funny thing about human interaction - we use visual body cues all the time to establish what the author's true intention is. If I said: "Oh, I love anchovies on a pizza" with a dead-pan straight face, you might assume that I really like anchovies on my pizza. But if I said: "Oh, I love anchovies on a pizza" with a big, goofy grin on my face, you'd assume I was just being sarcastic.
Being able to see people's faces is a general expectation in societies everywhere - not just the "Western World". It's a part of human nature and is cross-cultural - any psychology or communication class will tell you that.
>> Surely it is HER "right" who can see her beauty & who cannot?
Then why not make the men do it too?

Yes women have the right to be different to men AND to each other in the West. In some muslim countries women all look pretty much the same in their burkhas. Women certainly are visually stimulated. You state a gross generalization there.
I consider it strange that any culture can be so repressed about sexuality that people have to cover their bodies including sometimes even their faces to deal with the natural desire to be sexually stimulated. Thinking about sex does not harm anybody. It is natural and human. It is harmful to repress human nature. It makes people angry inside when they can't express their natures and it makes them do crazy things like blow themselves up in crowds of people. If muslims enjoyed getting off sexually more often there would probably be fewer suicide bombings.

Well, as a person who is thinking of converting to Islam one day soon, i've been doing a lot of studying lately about this subject.
The idea 'we in the West' have about Islam is totally wrong.
The man must dress modestly too, he has his own 'hijab' and not only women but also men must lower their gaze as to not be tempted.
The more i read and learn the more I believe btw that covering up gives a woman more freedom. She is no longer opressed by male sexist stares, getting undressed by mens eyes, she is no longer valued for her looks, she does not have to be an addict to the latest fashion whims, etc. And she will be appreciated for her personality, her brains.
If ppl would start to try to understand Islam, they would see that Islam actually gives women a lot of rights.
That in some countries men interpret the Quo'ran to their own 'needs' is totally wrong, but happens unfortunately. how ever, this has nothing to do with Islam.
In Islam the woman has lmany rights and lots of respect. I truelly think we 'Western women' have reason to be jealous of them in lots of ways!

1. A pair of shorts is not business attire for either sex..
2. Women certainly are visually stimulated. (Orlando Bloom comes to mind)
Men and woman are different physically for a reason (procreation). Sexual organs do make make one gender better then the other. We are not that different...we feel, we bleed, we laugh and we think. I am not nor will I ever take second stage to a man just because I am female.

one word for you: RAPE.
How does a women accuse a man of this in Islam?
How many "male" witnesses does she need?
What happens if she loses her "case"?
Stoning?
EDIT: Once again, a Muslim refused to address the statement of HOW MANY WITNESSES DOES A WOMEN HAVE TO PRESENT TO PROVE RAPE?
HOW MANY OF THEM MUST BE MALE?
You avoid the parts you are ashamed of, you pretend they don't exist. Get real. Western Islam is not the same as Orthodox Islam which is practiced in 90% of the Muslim Nations.
Christians disagree with the way loony parts of Christianity are practiced, why won't Muslims???
That would go along way towards bringing down this barrier people have between the religions.
BUT YET YOU STILL REFUSE TO RECOGNIZE THE INJUSTICES PRACTICED BY A MAJORITY OF YOUR RELIGION.
Edit2: Its a f*ck*ng Shaira law, that has nothing to do with Islam?

Well, *I* as a woman, am also a very visual person, and I am more visually stimulated than you might imagine. So I have to disagree with you there.
If you want to wear a hijab, that is your business. I will never wear one. And I really don't care what men wear to the office.

in the case of dress I agree with you 100%. Though I will say that it still should be done by a woman's free will.
Though you do have serious problems of equality in many Muslim nations. For example, in Saudi Arabia it is illegal for a woman to get a drivers license. It is also forbidden to travel without written permission from her husband or father. The list goes on.
This is sexist and wrong.

It always confused me why WOMEN were the ones expected to cover up to keep men from looking at them. Shouldn't MEN control themselves, wouldnt that be TRUE equality??????
