I'm looking to give my wedding a theme from anywhere between the 1920's and 1940's. For my reception though, I want to have objects everywhere of things from these periods. Like a pair of those old lace up ankle boots (Mary Poppins Style). I'm going to be having a DJ playing old songs but can't think of any good decoration items. Also, for my invitations, I don't want to send out a paper invitation but rather, an object. For example, my sister got married on the beach in Hawaii and for her inviation she sent out bottles filled with sand and shells and scolls with every guest name on it. The actual invitation was laquered to the bottle. Any ideas on something unique I could do for mine?

I have same idea for my wedding, here are some suggestions. First of all, I would forgo the boots, unless you are going with a Victorian style wedding. The 1930's was an absolutely lovley decade. Just make sure you pic one decade because there is a lot of difference between the clothing from the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. If doing the 1920's or 1930's you might want to look into getting finger waves, and getting an authentic dress from that era. They are avalible and often not expensive.Instead of a DJ, I would have an orchestra or big band, or a jazz band that would play songs of that era. I would send out invitations and choose an art deco design, or you could send out something which is uniquely art deco. Or what about a black and white photograph of you and you hubby to be of you dressed in clothing from that era, and a photograph which is meant to look old. For decoration ideas, I would watch old movies, it depends on your setting of where your wedding is taking place.

When it comes to decor, if you are doing it youself and not hiring an outside company to take care of this for you I would scower all the vintage stores you can in a major metropolitan area closest to you. You need to go where the items will be so make sure the city you are looking in was established before 1920.

As for invitations, you can spruce up a standard invitation by using a special type of paper to make it look old and "vintage". I also recommend using a specific font to give it that extra touch. If you are really wanting to send an "object" as an invitation, keep in mind that it could get pretty expensive (3-5x more than a paper invitation) because finding and buying the items won't be cheap and neither will the shipping of the objects. Some objects you could use are small vintage hatboxes with the invitation inside; a small, wooden chest with the invitation inside (by small I mean 3"Wx6"Lx3"H; etc.

Try watching old movies from that era and see what items stand out to you that you could use for either decor or your invitation idea.

My cousin had a Vintage Wedding. It was the most beautiful wedding i've ever seen.
He dressed up with those knee cut pants and high boots and a cape and cane. And they rode in and left on a horse carriage. They had the priests give their vowes and the cermony also was taken outside.
All their pictures were taken in black and white.
As of this day he has those pictures on the wall in some beautiful antic frmaes that he found at flea markets, yard sales and ebay.
Good luck....her eare some links that might help:

You'll have to pick a particular decade, or even year. There is a huge difference between 1920 and 1940.

You should pick a decade and research clothing, home decor, etc. for that time. Each decade has distinctive design elements, though the 1930's were mostly about the Depression.

Go with the 20s. Everything was so lovely then.

Perhaps you could buy mini, vintage, hat boxes from a craft store and put the invites inside.

Go to e-Bay! They have tons of that stuff. Also, I was cruising around on sites, looking for swords from LOTR, and saw a TON of costume sites, with some of those old-fashioned shoes.

I had a really vintage wedding. We went back to caveman times and
I hit her over the head with a club and dragged her off to consumate our marriage.
