You need to go to the vet RIGHT NOW.

If you don't have a vet, you can find an avian vet in your area at

Does the white thing in the nostril look like a hard plate? If so, that's supposed to be there.
On the other hand, the stuff on the legs could be "scaly face mites", which also burrow into the beak and nostrils (maybe that's what you are seeing). The mites are NOT visible to the human eye. You NEED to get the bird to an avian vet right away. The mites can disfigure your bird severely and eventually kill it. Don't worry - humans can't catch these mites. I found a parakeet outside sevefal months ago that had a very bad case of scaly face mites, and all of his toenails fell out, and his beak barely looked like a beak. I took him to an avian vet who gave him a shot of anti-mite medicine, and that did the trick. Please visit the websites below:

Yes, your bird has Scaley Face, which is caused by the mite,Cnemidocoptes Pilae, which produces a series of coral like encrustations, typically around the beak. In severe cases,it can spread to the legs and even to the body, and may lead to malformation of the beak. If you have another bird, separate them as this will spread quickly to the others. You can buy treatment from a pet store, but it is not that effective. As an owner of many Parakeets, my advice is to seek treatment from a vet.

There is a product called SCATT and it is made for those two problems. It really works and it was worth the price after I noticed a big difference. The fungus-like stuff is called scaly face mites and can be found anywhere that there is bare skin. It is sold over the net so you might not be able to buy it in stores.

It is impossible to reliably diagnose health issues over the internet. You need to take the bird to an avian certified and experienced vet. Fungus and bacteria can wreck havoc on a bird's body, both inside and out. Infections can rage, even killing the bird, with very little to any outward sign of a problem.

Other things to watch for in a sick bird is remaining extremely fluffed up and lethargic, seeming uncoordinated, not eating or drinking, and unusual feces. Any unusual colors of consistancy with the feces typically indicates digestion and nutrition problems as well as infection.

Vet. Now. Good luck with your feathered one!

Not sure about the white things, but you would be best to go to an AVIAN CERTIFIED vet.....most vets arent avian certified, they have to be to care for birds. It could be dangerous if you don't get the parakeet seen by one.

It does sound like scaley mites. There's a product you can buy over the counter called Scalex that will get rid of them. It's very dangerous to have scaley mites on the nostrils. They can form internally and actually suffocate the bird.
You can't wait on this.
Let us hear how he does.

Sounds like you need to take a trip to an Avain Vet Today.
