The percentage of priests who were pedophiles was about 1/6th the rate in the general population. The problem with the scandal was a combination of bad science on the part of the psychiatric community and the secretive nature of canon law. Many Protestant communities have a higher rate than the Catholic Church, but the Catholic Church is larger. To give an idea of the size difference, 40% of Christians in the United States are Catholic, but the remaining 60% are divided into over 40,000 independent denominations.

Pedophiles seek occupations that put them in contact with children. The public school system, coaching, boy scouts and ministry all do this. Likewise, sociopaths seek occupations that put them in positions of power such as politicians, managers, teachers, ministers and police. Few sociopaths kill.

Jim Jones was a member of the Disciples of Christ, the one who killed 914 people in South America, but they knew he was nuts when they ordained him. The group dynamics of the Disciples of Christ kept them from protecting their memebers just as the group dynamics of the Catholic hierarchy prevented protecting their members. Bad group dynamics happen in any group.

Further, some Catholic priests are married. Most people do not realize married people become priests in some parts of the Catholic Church, it is just rare in the United States. Catholic Churches are large self-governing communities. Each of the 23 self-governing Churches makes its own rules for internal discipline. The largest of these in the United States is the Roman Church. As it is a worldwide Church, it isn't just the American Church that decided its internal rules. Most of the world does not think a married clergy would be a good idea. Since changing the rules requires a 2/3rds vote plus one, I do not see a rules change anytime soon.

And as to whether the married clergy have a lower abuse rate. No they don't. Mental illness is mental illness, you are or you are not going to engage in harmful deviant behavior. It is more an issue of statistics than marital status. About 5% of all wives in the United States are physically assaulted each year. There is no evidence that marriage improves behavior at all. The married clergy have much lower rates of abuse than the general population, but you cannot keep a skilled abuser totally out of the clergy because they are skilled at hiding their abusive behaviors. In all denominations abusers get into the system. The Catholic clergy have an unusually low rate of abusers, but those that got in were able to manipulate the system to protect themselves.

Yes! They should get married! It will greatly benefit the lives of the priests. They are men of God and should have families and enjoy the sexual relationship of a woman. That would set a good example for their people (followers)
Molesting children is so low I could never imagine doing that and I dont know what must have been going through their minds
They should marry. Celibacy is not for humans. End of story.

Centuries ago, Catholic priests were allowed to marry and have children. Of course, when the priests passed away, the property would go to the widows. The church would not have ownership and/nor rights to that property. Eventually, the Church disallowed the priests to wed; all in the name of greed. They wanted control over as much as they could get their hands on. It was more political than spiritual that priests, bishops, cardinals, etc were to be celibate. As far as sexual abuse goes, that depends on the character of the individual.

The ban on Catholic Priests getting married started years and years ago to keep them from gaining wealth. The church did not want them to have descended that could keep money in the family. It was a way to keep them from getting powerful. I think there are enough stop gaps around now to keep that from happening again so yes I think they should get married.
But it won't stop scandals. The people who have sex with children are attracted to children. If they get married they will still be attracted to children. They need to learn that sex with them is wrong and they are doing an enormous amount of damage.

Priestly celibacy change into presented about one thousand years in the past because of perceived issues and to make monks better committed to the church. The Catholic Church now has a recruitment disaster because the requirement places the conventional youthful Catholic guy off. despite the indisputable fact that, there are a selection of clergy in different church homes who've been got here across to be sexual predators. The Catholic Church is maximum criticised by way of way it dealt with it. Catholic doctrine signifies that the church can not ever be considered to be incorrect so that they lined it up. Now that the cover-up has been got here across that is stuck them, as they say, a top ding around the ear. different church homes are better open and dealt with it outstanding on the time.

Marriage as in gay marriage? Because all abuse charges are involving boys mostly, just a few girls, so I dont think marriage will help the situation. I do believe it is inevitable that the Catholic Church will have to open up its heart and doors to marriage in order to have enough priests. The days of sending your boy who is "different" into the priest hood is over- that closet has been opened and so is the enrollment of priests.

The premise of your question assumes that a priest is a pedophile simply because he is unmarried. That would mean all unmarried people have the potential to become pedophiles.

Clearly, allowing priests to marry is neither the cause nor the solution to the clergy sex scandals.

Pedophiles are people who can't handle functional adult relationships, that's why they go into the profession that doesn't allow marriage.

The catho-lice cult didn't enact celibacy because it was a "calling from god", they made it a rule because the cult was rampant with nepotism, concubines, prostitution, greed, murder and other unpleasant activities practiced by its priest, bishops, cardinals and popes. Eliminating marriage preventes all of that; it served a purpose in the 14th century CE, but not now.

(To any airheads who say "pedophiles are gay", kindly explain why OUTSIDE of religious organizations, girls are FOUR times as likely to be molested but make up half the children. Check with the American Psychological Association for the facts. www.apa.org)

Yes, it would at least help the abuse scandals. The fact is that sex is a natural part of people's lives, and by creating a weird abstinence rule for priests, the Catholic church recruits people who have weird issues with sex into its clergy.

The priesthood has been a haven for gay men for centuries. If the Church were to permit priest to marry, a strong emotional barrier for many would be removed and the priesthood would be greatly strengthened.

Would this end all sexual abuse by priests...no, but in time, it should reduce it greatly.
