Okay, so we have the Air Force, the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Army, and the Marines.... so what would you call the armed forces in space if and when it happened? Would marines still be called marines? What would you call the people on the ships?

This is actually for a novel that i'm contracted to write. I'm perfectly fine using the term marines if it's appropriate and i'm pretty sure it is, but about the men manning the ships, i'm concerned about that.

Knowing this, I cannot use terms that are already coined like "Star fleet" and things of the like.

Thanks everyone for their input!

Marines were formed as Naval Soldiers. This was the infantry arm of the Navy, and, in the beginning of the United States Marine Corps, they were there for ship security, and, in combat, ("Prepare to repel boarders!), they would climb the rigging and fire down into the enemy, aiming especially for the officers.

On the other hand, it's your book, so call them whatever you need too.

Most science fiction stories refer to the space ship crew using Navy terminology. It is a ship, after all.

I would expect there to be a Marine type of force that specialized in projecting power from space onto a planet in much the same way as the Marines project force from the water to the land.

That would depend on which service was flipping the bill. The military would probably start a new service entirely and this would be made up of the best parts of the other services. Which would end up with new titles and ranks. Though I suspect the marines would open up a new elite called space marines but that is a lonnnnggg time away!

Naval terminology still applies to space operations. My hubby plays a space game called EVE, and he is part of a space fleet, with carriers, cruisers, destroyers, as ships. Yes, Marines are still called Marines. There are also civilians, pirates, consulates, and fleet command, in the game.

Robert beat me to telling you that there's already a SPACECOM.

So I'd imagine in the future we'd have a new arm called SPACECOM Forward, to signify that they were the ones actually out in space. SPACECOM Rear or HQ would be the terrestrial one.

Marines will ALWAYS be Marines, no matter what you do to them or where you put them. The Marines could be specifically referred to as SpaceCorps, I suppose.

I kind of like Spailors. Space sailors. But I'm goofy that way.

If it is based on current governments the US Air Force would cover that stuff.

But traditionally in science fiction naval ranks and organizations have been used for the space force. (this is why they have Marines and not Soldiers because of their relationship with the navy)

Actually, the US Air Force already has a large cadre of forces dedicated to space operations. By law (US code Title 10), the Air Force is primarily responsible for combat operations in the Air, in Space, and in Cyberspace. AF Space Command, headquartered at Peterson AFB CO, is responsible for operation of all space-based US military systems.
