First off there are two things you need to address in this, the first is the fact of getting rid of the lice. This as all the others have said needs to be done not only in the childs hair but also in the home, car, toys, etc.
The best way to do this is to take all the toys that could carry them, mainly stuffed animals and tie them up in a trash bag, as air tight as possible and get some lice killing spray and spray it in there and let it sit for a few days.
The linens and any thing that can be needs to be washed, hot water if possible, and then make sure that you do not bring them back in the house till you have the housr rid of them too.
Then for the house you will need to use a lice killing spray or shampoo on the furnature, carpets, or anything else they could hide in.
As for the child, you will need to wash his/her hair with a lice killing shampoo and make sure you pick out ALL the nits. This is VERY IMPORTANT, as even one knitt could re-infest everything.
Now that you have rid yourself of the problem, we hope, you can work on preventing it.
1) Make sure that you are keeping everyone's heads clean.
2) Make sure that the people you are letting in your home are clean, now im not saying to go ape and start picking in everyone's hair but just be mindfull of the pikney that come over and watch to see if they may have bugs.
3) Try to keep styling gel, hairspray, or some sort of product in your hair as it makes your head less desirable to lice.
4 Optional) If you are in an area that is high prone to lice, via kids your pikney play with or what ever, then you may want to try washing thier hair with lice killer every few weeks as this generaly will keep them out too.
Good luck and hope this helps...

That happened with my daughter too when she was in kindergarten. I did the lice shampoo and combed it all out three times. Then I got smart and called the school. They had the nurses check all the kids in her class and 14 kids were taken out of the class until they were lice free. I didn't have a problem after that.

I added some tea tree oil (available from any good health food shops) to my kids shampoo after my youngest had an outbreak of them - seemingly the lice don't like the stuff and so far it has worked a treat. Keep combing through her hair daily and remove them by hand and as somebody else suggested - get a prescription from the doctors as they can give you stuff stronger than the over the counter treatments. Good luck x

i know this sounds really gross, but...
while my son was in a German kindergarten, they had a bout of lice and all the mothers in the village STOPPED washing their kids hair (i know, ewe)... i'm american, so when i heard this it went against everything i hold dear... but i thought "hey, when in rome..." so i only washed it once a week for about a month. he never got lice and the outbreak was really short-lived. they said that the lice can't survive if there's too much natural oil on the scalp... i checked with the german doctor, and she said the same thing... (i know, you must be thinking "bet the german's must smell great" --sarcastic) but at least they don't have lice, right?
i have two boys, 13 & 8 and neither of them have EVER had lice ( i hope i don't jinx it now) and i've never had to treat them with anything...
i'm super paranoid about stuff like this, too (get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it!) so i worried a lot, but this really seems to work...
p.s. if you're concerned about their hair smelling icky (like i am) try the "Shampoo Fresh Hair Fragrance" by CLEAN... works wonders!
GOOD LUCK with whatever method you choose!

I'm not sure if it orks, but I have always heard that if you use a little hairspray on their hair everyday, they are not supposed to be able to live in the hair. Make sure that when you treat her hair, check everyone in the house wash all bedding in hot water, there is also a spray you can buy to spray on the carpet and funiture.
(Insead of Lice shampoo you can also use plain white vinegar use a cup of vinegar saturate their hair leave for a few minutes and then wash as usual.)

call your doctor for a prescription strength shampoo. It works better than over the counter. Quell..I think is the name of it. It seems that some lice don't die with the over the counter stuff and are immuned. Your daughter is probably not actually getting rid of it all and they just hatch every few days.

washing the hair does not work.
you must mechanically (with a tiny comb) remove ALL the little eggs from her hair. cutting the hair short makes this easier.
but there is no substitution for removing all nits.
now; i used olive oil two nights in a row on my hair to kill them.
it has to be two nights because new ones hatch.
i have heard mayonnaise works well.
these things interfere with their ability to breathe.
treating it with the commercially available lice treatments
you can get in the stores is good, too.
but again you have to shampoo with the special stuff twice.
they are very hard to get rid of.
wash all bedding and cloth things (like toys) when you do this.
get the spray also to spray on furniture, etc.
it usually comes with the shampoo.
this is a difficult problem.
good luck.

tell her to keep away from the other childrens heads. thats how it is spread - the contact of heads.
change all sheets and pillow cases.
go to the pharamcy and buy a good, strong lice killer thing.
comb and comb and comb.
tell all the other parents to check their kids - if the school hasnt done it already.

a script from the doctor and follow the directions given...however, you have to make sure that all the kids around her are checked and treated as well. her school or daycare needs to know so they can check all the other kids too. they're very careful when doing this, so don't worry about that. kids pass it with their clothes and brushes/combs sometimes too. even a coat hanging in the same closet can pass them on. you also need to treat all the bedding, spray disinfectant on your furniture in your house and the seats of your car, and car-seat if necessary.
they're a pain in the neck to get rid of sometimes, but you just have to stick with it cause you can get rid of them!!!
good luck and take care!!!

Have you washed every thing in your house? and you can use Olive Oil on their hair then put plastic rap around her hair and she has to keep it in for a least 24 hours! and lice is attracted to clean hair so after it is gone (this is nasty) she shouldn't wash her hair for up to a week! it sounds nasty but works! then you should put all of her hair stuff in boiling water the hair ties throw them away but the hair brushes she can keep! but i would not take the risk i would throw them away!
