The police generally only put a hold on it long enough to finish their investigation. (Finger prints, etc). If in doubt, call and ask the agency that has the investigation.
To get it back, proof of ownership, current insurance card and either a valid license or someone with that will drive it for you if you don't have one. (If the tag happens to be expired, that would have to be updated also).
With that, and the payment to the towing yard for the tow and storage, you can take your vehicle home.
Added: Tried to answer your email to me, but your "address has not been confirmed" so it wouldn't go. Here is what I said:
No, sorry. It has to be insurance for THAT car, since it goes with the car, not the driver. You have two choices, put insurance in place on that car to drive it home, or arrange to have it towed to your house. Keep it mind even if you tow it, you couldn't then drive it without insurance, so I would see getting insurance as the best bet.
Good luck. Tom, owner of a repair shop and tow service.

If it was impounded by the police, you generally have to get a release form from them. If they are liable for the towing and storage, you may have to pay that to get the release form. Be sure to save your receipts, because you may get your money back from your auto insurance.
The easiest way to find out is call the police station and ask.
