Dr. Mercola lists soda (whether diet or not) as 1 of the 5 absolutely worsts foods you can eat or drink. the non-diet ones typically have 10 treaspoons of sugar in a single can, so that is a lot of empty calories and damage to your teeth. the diet ones contain artificial sweeteners that many studies have shown to not be safe.
another concern is the carbonization itself. studies have shown that the additives used to produce carbonation (such as malic, tartaric and other organic acids), cause damage to tooth enamel. carbonated drinks also contain phosphorus, which can cause bones to lose calcium.
most of these drinks also contain caffeine, (but less than a regular size cup of coffee). caffeine is addictive and is a stimulant, so potentially harmful-- especially for growing kids. a lot of the new energy drinks pack a TON of caffeine.
most of the above is from Dr. Mercola:

Don't listen to the people about rotting your teeth - that's sugared carbonated drinks. You can buy flavored carbonated water or diet soda and not have that problem.

I like the pop, but if it contains the phosphoric acid (which coke, pepsi, and most of the other moderate to dark pops do) then i would take the beer. Drinking a beer a day does not cause alcoholism! Why would doctors recommend a glass of red wine per day, if daily moderate alcohol consumption was an instant ticket to alcohol abuse? And as for dum dum... some other idiots in this place... gosh!

They are both deadly to our health and all. Simply break down the listed (and non-listed ingredents in them, like Benzene) and you will start to get an idea of what we are drinking when we drink them. For one, most of them are sweetened with very cheap and easy to make unnatural and not healthy high fructose corn syrups. This product tends to make everyone who uses it fat and over weight. This is just the beginning.......Do some research and find out the truth and live.......See Dr. Clark's book, "The Cure For All Diseases" as well, as she explains why these kind of drinks are so bad for you.......

The suger wrots your teeth, makes you put on weight, and can cause brittle bones in severe cases. Diet ones are just as bad. They just replace the suger with sweetneers- often worse than suger, but with less fat.
AND the fizz gives you trapped wind.
