People do that because they are too lazy to take the cart to the cart rack. I've also seen people who did return the cart the lazy way...shove the cart as hard as you can so it will make it to the rack without them having to walk the cart all the way to the rack.
Some people will even park their cart right behind your car while you are trying to back out of your parking space.
I've never hit a cart, but I have purposefully nosed them out of the way with my car. I was driving a Volvo 240 sedan at the time....totally shopping cart proof car.
In the battle of shopping cart vs car...a Volvo 240 sedan will always win because they have a chrome & rubber trim piece that goes around the body shell about 8 inches below the windows. The cart will run into this before it hits any other part of the car...including the taillights.

As with most things here in the United States, people have become used to (for a lack of better words) half a**ing everything. I actually was waiting to park and the parking spot was right beside the cart return, the person pushed their cart around their vehicle and parked it between four bumpers and left it there. Of course, I am furious and take the cart all the way into the store with me!! Unbelievable!!!! Explain this one??? He was right beside the freakin' return!!

I have seen carts go careening across the parking lot and have been thankful that my car was not in the line of fire! I always either take my cart back to the store or put it in a designated spot. I have had quite a few paint dings due to shopping carts. Good question!

I don't leave them "in the middle", but don't always put them away. My reasoning is child safety. I have young children strapped into car seats, I am NOT going to go very far from them.
I am extra paranoid because I was once held up with the crook getting between me and my baby. If there are people around I will not even go a few feet, I leave the cart in front of the car.

Okay, I admit, sometimes I leave my shopping cart in the parking lot, ONLY because I can't find a cart return area...and even then, I make sure I leave the cart somewhere it won't disturb other cars and people...like near the bushes, haha.

LAZY!!! plus to a certain degree ignorant. i'm sure those people get po'd at the fact that sometimes there is a cart in their way when they pull in to a space. and that should be enough for them to realise they have an obligation to put theirs away when their done. there's no excuse, if your able to push the thing around to begin with , there is no excuse that you can't put it where it goes when your done! could you imagine how nice it would be if people gave some respect rather than just demand it unwarranted it all the time?

Face it, there are a lot of very lazy inconsiderate people in the world and the ones who just abandon their carts are in that category. Recklessly abandoned carts can cause damage to other cars and cause accidents. I haven't actually hit one, but did need to navigate around one that took off in the wind.

Never ran into one.. But have seen many times carts running loose and smashing into parked cars..
I think all stores should follow Aldi's solution..
Have the carts locked up and charge you 25 cent to borrow the cart.. You get your quarter back when you return and lock up the cart..
NEVER seen any loose carts in their parking lot

I have never run into one, but do find them left in the last available parking space. People are just too lazy to take them back where they belong.
