English is one of the official languages of India, but there are many different native languages spoken there and some of them are also used as official languages, like Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi and Tamil.

Partly because many Indian languages share phonological characteristics. Even unrelated languages like Hindi and Telugu have developed similarities because of geographic proximity and cultural connections. Linguists call this type of non-genetic language group a "sprachbund." The other effect is that English is usually learned as a second (or third or fourth) language from Indian teachers, and in effect that particular style of speaking English has developed into a distinct dialect. And of course, as has been mentioned, varieties of Indian English are only similar, not totally identical.

each peoples have their own dialects / local languages. But, it seems most that go to school learn English .. some learn the Queens English because England was in control at one time, even in the early history of the 13 colonies. Even today other counties want to learn the English language because of American businessman wanting to outsource their products from the American people. ... all because its less expense on their pocketbooks

India has more than 20 mainstream languages. Hindi is the national language. English is very common too.

English too, majority of the educated lot. Others make do with local languages like Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Oriya, Bengali, Marathi etc.,

Yes, Indians have a lot of dialects/languages, whatever you call it. And yes, theydo speak ENLGISH for the reason that they were once under British regime. that's why if you notcie, when Indians speak Englsih, their accent is somewhat similar to Brits..
