I want to build a light like the one below because I don't want pay $35 for a pre-made one. I know it can be done because I own a night light that is just a blue LED. I figured $35 for what amounts to a cluster LED's, a resister, a compositor, and a base is a bit excessive when you figure they're built in bulk.

When I searched on Google all I could find was plans for battery powered lights.

I am working on this very same problem now for the same reason you are.

You need the brightest LEDs you can find, but you have to take into account *both* the mcd (millicandela) rating, and the angle of light projection. The two combined determine lumens, and it's the lumens rating of a bulb that you want to aspire to (but good luck, incandescents are bright). There is a calculator on the Web for mcd+angle -> lumens.

The brightest LED now made is supposedly made by Cree. You can get a free sample but there is a delay in getting it.

Anyway I suggest using a spare AC adapter for AC->DC conversion. Put the LEDs in parallel of course and calculate the proper resistor (need a high wattage one!) using Ohm's law.

You are not going to cobble an assembly together for less than one off-the-shelf, whether it "seems excessive" or not, if the device is made in high-volumes (I. E. retail).

If you wanted to try, you have to use an array of LED's and you have to convert the AC to DC and step down the voltage. By the time you do all that, you have spent $35.00 in materials - this assumes your time is worth nothing, which it is not.

Splurge and buy the pre-made unit. Go ahead, you deserve it!

You will need lots of LEDs connected in series so that they will run off a higher voltage. This can be expensive.
