Yes, I believe you'd have to get a law enforcement degree, and experience as a cop. Then you could apply for a position with an ASPCA enforcement agency.
I do agree that it would be rare to get such a position. Not many cities have full-time animal control (protection) officers.

Well first off it seems like a difficult job to get. For the entire city in that show there are what, six cops total? Might want to look into that first.

actually, if you go on their website, all the qualifications are on there. There is a position open right now. You have to live in NYC to be hired by them though. If you live outside of NYC, you will have to all your local animal control to find out if they have a humane law enforcement program.

there are tons of ways you can go about doing that. you can try going to you local animal shelter and ask and they might have some info on how you can become an animal cop.
