things happen ; did you search for it to really show it that you mean it? or oh well; was the dog tied out ? collars and chains break ; get out of a kennel? door left open; we are humans but it is what you did afterwards that shows if you really meant it by searching, flyers, checking the pound etc; if you did everything that you could then that should ease your conscience; we had a dog that we had to give away to a good home with plenty of yard , 2 towns away; the dog came back twice ; took him 2 weeks and he was so thin; he stayed with us thereafter; we felt bad that we didn't have a big yard but all he wanted was to be with us. I would take sometime off from owning a dog but I would volunteer in a rescue to help other dogs and get healthy and smarter with pup care etc.

What happened to the puppy? Why isn't it there? Did your parents take it? Did it die in a closet? Did it escape from the house or yard?
If you weren't taking care of it and are too young to even own a dog, then yes, it's your fault. While you may be a good person, if you can't take care of a dog and are still in school, then it wasn't responsible to get the dog in the first place. You are 13, that's too young to own a dog.
It's also your fault for allowing it's mother to recklessly breed. I'm guesing that she wasn't a show dog that was being bred to improve the line.
Edit: You left a 6 month old puppy tied up in the front yard with no one outside with him? Then yes, it is whoever left him there's fault. You are 13, where are your parents in all this? Did they say this was ok? If they did, then it's *their* fault for not teaching you responsibility. If you did it on your own, then yes, it is your fault. At 13, one should have a respect for animals and know that it's not right to keep a puppy tied up outside. Hopefully someone took him who has a loving home and won't leave him tied to a stake in the front yard.

He was tied up outside which is a dangerous place for a dog to be. He could have escaped on his own, he could have been stolen. The fact is, at the end of a rope outside the house is no place for a dog. You're looking for someone to say it's not your fault but you are the owner and finding a safe location for your dog to be when you're not home is part of your duty. Obviously outside was not the correct choice. Start looking for your dog now so you can keep your promise to the pup and keep it safe.

Dogs do not understand human language, and they are most certainly NOT human. So that puppy didn't understand a word of your promise.
As far as whether it's your fault or not -- it's the dog owner's responsibility to make sure that the dog cannot get outside while the owner's away. But, accidents happen. If it was due to carelessness on your part, then it was probably your fault. But if it was something difficult to foresee, then don't blame yourself.

I am sorry to hear of that.. You could ask around the neighbors... if you have a picture of the sweetie, make up some and carry around with you and also visit the city pound to see if one has been picked up and turned in.. You could also put an ad in the newspaper under the pet section

I don't understand? Most of my dogs die from old age. I did have one hop a fence when I was a kid and get hit by a car. Ultimately if your dogs are dying and running off I would think yes. it is your fault.

Yes it is your fault you left it tied up, you should have put the pup in the house in a crate.

If you left it loose outside unsupervised or not in a safe environment it would be your fault. But not if it was out of your control.

If it was outside, maybe someone stole him/her. I had that happen once. In this case, it really wouldn't be your fault.

No, it is not your fault, unless you left the fence or the door open.
