Gum is not a food. You aren't supposed to eat it. Gum is like a teething toy for toddlers, only for (semi-)adult people. You chew it to excercise your jaw and it gives you something to do. The calories are required to be on the box just in case you have to swallow it. It's not nutrition!

Even a sugar-free mint has 1 calorie!! Everything we ingest has calories! We chew until the flavour is lost but whether it's a tic tac or a bubblegum it affects your calorie intake for the day. I prefer to eat a proper meal!

Gum isn't considered a food since it is not ingested. Gum is just a treat to chew, and chew, and chew - til ya just don't want to chew anymore!

Well, since it is not meant to be consumed, it doesn't qualify as food...what it is considered, I'm not really sure.
