Because they are awsome! Because they are big, roomy, and rear wheel drive. Oh, and made in America.

Law enforcement has always needed a vehicle that will keep up it wouldn't do any good to have an officer driving a gremlin trying to chase someone driving a mustang. The crown vic is a strong built car it can take a beating and has a drivetrain that will really put the rubber to the pavement. Also Ford offers special engine and transmissin packages for law enforcement. My father was a county officer for 18 years and his patrol car held a supercharged 5.4 v8 the same engine that the ford lightning uses. This coupled with the training that officers are required to obtain makes for an awsome combination on the streets ans for the future, with the crown vic disappearing some departments are looking to the Impalas and around here some officers have a special version of the mustang called the bullet. The bullet is a pursuit package mustang.

The Crown VIC for police cars because, as stated, its a rear wheel drive, BIG V8. Room for "gear", big trunk, etc.
Its Ford's BIG car. Other manufacturers make police vehicles, too. But, when so many manufacturers are updating their product beyond what a police dept needs. Ford has maintained the Crown Vic's integrity.
Plus, Its the one vehicle that ford has a police interceptor package for direct from the factory.
Ford has not stopped making the Crown Vic. The Michigan State Police will begin using the Dodge as their standard issue vehicle in 2008, it think. But, the crown Vic continues.

Ford officials say the Crown Vic remains the best combination of size, speed, and features designed specifically for law enforcement purposes.
``The Crown Vic stands alone as a police car," said Tony Gratson, Ford's national government sales manager.
For more than a decade, Ford's Crown Vic has been the leading choice among law enforcement agencies. It's a roomy, full-size sedan with rear-wheel drive, which officers swear by for acceleration and handling.

KJ's answer is largely correct, though the engines do not have more power than the normal Crown Vics. I have one of these cars, have done a lot of research about them, to include looking at Ford information. The engine makes decent power and has a reputation for easily making 250,000 miles without serious problems.
Darn near everything else, to include the seats, is different on the cop cars--heavy duty and/or high-performance, to include heavy-duty wheels and an aluminium driveshaft for, Ford says, "sustained high-speed operation."
These cars drive great, are rock solid on the road even in driving rain and vicious wind, handle well for cars that size/weight. I've had mine on some narrow, winding mountain roads and it's just fine--not at all like driving a bad-handling land yacht....
They're terrific on the highway, too. No problem or discomfort to peel off 300 miles in four hours.
As you might have gathered, I love the car.

I agree with most people on this one, Powerful 4.6L V8, Rear-Wheel drive, and a very large car!
But I think the main reason the Crown Vic is preferred by Cops, is because NO ONE DRIVES THEM but cops!!

Ford offers a police package to departments. Tested and proven.
Higher horsepower, better suspension, brakes, heavy duty upolstery and alternator for high demand lights/siren equipment
Its a full size car roomy enough for "clients" in the back seat
Chevy and Dodge offer police packages too but Ford is old reliable

Because it is a full size, full frame vehicle with conventional rear wheel drive. Most P.D.s have found out that front wheel drives generally don't hold up well under severe conditions. Many departments will now be switching over to the Dodge Charger.

Actually, Toyota and Honda both make police cars as well.
The reason why the Crown Vic is prefered is it is rear wheel drive (Can hit curbs at high speed and not slow down) and the large interior that easily fits a large cop including gun and utility belt comfortably.
