Doing tax returns takes having a logical approach to the lines on the forms. You start with wages and move down the form. On schedule A you start with medical expenses and move down the form.
If there is a line or something about a line that you don't understand you need to read the instructions to gain a complete understanding of what is being looked at for that line.
The best way to understand taxes without going to school is to read the instruction booklet that comes with the forms, or, better yet go to IRS.GOV and request a copy of the latest IRS publication 17. This is a really good, concise guide to individual taxes.
After doing this I would suggest that you prepare your tax return and then buy an hour or so of a CPA's time. Let them look at the forms and advise you as to things that can be added, changes that need to be made and items that may be missing.
Another way would be to let a CPA prepare the return and have them go over it with you so that you understand it. Each year thereafter you can read the instruction booklet for tax law changes for that year and prepare you own return based on the prior year that the professional completed for you. Then you only need to go back to the CPA if there are significant changes in your situation and you need further guidance.

Taxes are simple and I have never used an accountant. You only get back money if after figuring out what you owe you find out that too much was withheld.

The amount you owe is based on your net income. Some of your income can be deducted if spent on things that congress has said you can such as mortages, medical, etc.

I would suggest going to a store like Office Max, Staples, Office Depot and for $20 get Turbotax 2006 when it comes out. Not as much fun as Madden Football 2006, but it will do your taxes.
