I believe the Terrier group is one of the most diverse in terms of appearances. Personality wise, they've been described as feisty, independent, determined, and energetic. Have you ever seen the Jack Russell races on Animal Planet? That's a great example of Terrier energy.
I have a Rat terrier mix (maybe he's all Rat - I'm not sure). I like to describe him as being like a JRT, but with an "off" switch. When I want it, I can get him as revved up and crazy about games, toys, or Agility as I want to. But he's good in the house and enjoys just hanging out on the couch on a rainy day, which is certainly more convenient for most pet dog owners!
Ratties tend to have longer legs and a smooth coat, as they have Italian Greyhound and Manchester Terrier in their ancestry. JRT's come with more variation as far as leg length, and coat - they can have short, Corgi-like legs or longer ones, and their coats can be smooth, wiry, or a twisted combination!

Besides their looks, not much. I have a Boston and my Boston has a best friend that is a Jack Russell, most Terriers are all bundles of energy. My experience with terriers are, they are not lap dogs, but they love to play tug-o-war and take hikes, things that require lots of energy! They are wonderful dogs if you can keep up with them!

I think appearances may vary greatly. However, I think all terriers possess a tenacious, prey-oriented. friendly, hyperactive personality. I have a terrier mix who looks a lot like Benji. I can only guess that he's a border terrier/wire hair terrier mix. He's DEFINITELY a terrier, however. You'd never confuse them with another breed!

As a JRT owner, I can tell you about them. For starters, they have personality, personality, personality. They can go all day and never complain about it. They love to run around and are great at catching mice or moles or squirrels. They are job oriented dogs. Don't give a Terror a job and they will find one for themselves. They like to cuddle as long as it is there idea. They like kids as long as they don't pull ears or tails. They can get along with cats as long as they are socialized early. They can be mean or if socialized, sweet as the day is long. Mine loves everyone along with cats. He likes other dogs but hates squirrels, moles, mice, spiders. They can be quite aggressive so you have to keep them active. Run all the energy out of them and you have a great dog.
They are 75% white and can be black-white, brown-white, or tricolored. They can have wired fur or slick fur or can be a combination. They can be anywhere from 10 in at the shoulder to 15 in.
