Well put.
Yes.
The answer is yes.
I love that song!!
You got it.
It's true.
God was one of us.
God is one of us.
See?
We are all in it together.
Until we all understand that we will continue to cause each other pain and suffering.
This is not the way.
The way is within each of us.
Peace, joy, and love.

This song fails to recognize that the whole Christian mythology (The New Testament) is based on god becoming one of us.

However, to answer your question first posed by Joan Osborne. If god (the Jesus version of god) were one of us today, our supposedly "Christian" administration would arrest him as an enemy combatant and give him a one way ticket to Guantanamo Bay. Think about it. The Character of Jesus in the available scripture stands for everything this administration is against: free healthcare, acceptance of those on the fringe of society, social welfare, anti-establishment, etc... My point is that the character of Jesus would most likely be a liberal. His destruction of the money exchange at the temple would be the equivalent today of walking onto the floor of the stock exchange and starting a bar brawl.

Then he should make himself more obvious, considering he's omnipotent and all.
