He probably coughs because he throat tickles. Have him take a hot shower, the steam will help. The nassal passage likes a tropical atmosphere so you need heat and moisture. Steam, puting the sheet over his nose when sleeping, and vapor all help. I even just get a couch throw or scarf around the house to brethe into which helps tremendously. I even used this technique while getting a steroid injection into my spinal cord to make sure I didn't cough.
