I was abused in that I had Christian parents. They tried to brain wash me into not thinking for myself and believing a bunch of fairy tales.

Yes I have a real job. I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry and I'm researching new lines of bacterial antibiotics.

Which Satanists do you mean?

If you mean members of the Church of Satan, then yes, those people really exist. The Church of Satan is a legitimate organization that opposes the Christian church. Last I heard (back in 1989), lifetime membership could be obtained with a $100 donation. I don't know what it is now.

I've only known one admitted Satanist, and he had a job. I doubt he was abused as a child, but I never asked him about that. I haven't seen him in 15 years, so I couldn't tell you where he is.

Now, if you mean people who worship Satan, I doubt those people seriously exist. Maybe there are a few delusional souls out there, but look at the logic of Christianity: If you believe in Satan, then you have to acknowledge God, and the Christian tenets dictate that if you don't follow God, then you are eternally punished. Well, gee, not much motivation there.

There were many claims of Satan-worshippers in the 80s, but they have been debunked. Outrageous claims of Satan baby machines that sacrificed 2 million babies have been shown to be false. Serial killers who claimed to kill for Satan were simply looking for an excuse to hide behind. And people gobbled that up because they wanted to believe in a Satan.

Yes, the Church of Satan is real. No, contrary to popular belief, they do NOT worship Satan. Satan is seen only as a figurehead, an embodiment of the spirit of rebellion, and is not taken literally by Satanists. In fact, Satanism discourages the belief in any deity at all.

Why? Because they respect the spirit of rebellion and non-conformity to society's standards. Which is why they respect characters that represents that attitude and spirit, like Loki and Satan (portrayed as an epic hero). Although they respect them, I would like to say again that they do NOT believe that they are real.

And as to whether they have real jobs - I know only 2 Satanists, both of whom are living comfortably in the upper-middle class of society, with fat six-figure paychecks.

It's been my understanding that a lot of what people call "Satanists" dont' really even worship the Judeo-Christian entity known as Satan. Most Satanists should actually be called Secular Humanists, but apparently that wasn't as catchy or something. I wish I could remember where I read that from.

Yes there are practicing Satanists in the world. They are just like any other religion, worshipping a diety and following a code of conduct determined by someone's writing. Like all religion, Satanism is up for interpretation and can be used for good and bad reasons. I believe the media has sensationalized any religion that is not mainstream and ignorance breeds fear. Personally, I think its a little creepy but there are plenty of violent references in Christianity and millions get past that.
