Only two scenarios are presented. Curious to know what you think.

The first man: an intellectual thinker who thinks his way out of believing in a God? This man surely utilized all that God meant for Him to utilize--the intellect and reason, but unfortunately he did not "get it" about God Himself. He lived a compassionate live for others.

The second man: he is very humble and actually border on mental retardation, but he loved God all he could. Unfortunately, he couldn't judge much for himself using the excellent reasoning God gave to mankind. But he "felt" it in his heart that he thought God was simply "good". He was at times, unabe to control his impulses, however. He would be indulgent in some sensual pleasures because he couln't help it. He wasn't very bright.

The first man made intellect his god.

According to Einstein
"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift."

Just because someone make a bad choice does not mean that God does not love him and call Him his child. I am sure that the first man was not perfect either (because no one is).

Good intention don't mean much when you think about it. If somebody dies in a drunk driving accident, I would bet the drunk driver says, "I didn't mean to." But that makes the other person no less dead and him no less responsible. He chose to drink.

The only unforgivable sin is unbelief no matter how you came to that conclusion.

I think the second man would be more pleasing to God. You mention the "excellent reasoning God gave to mankind" that he could not use. But you also mention that he was not very bright, and was borderline mentally retarded. Thus he did not have the capacity to use the excellent reasoning. He made do with what he was capable of. He didn't pretend to be perfect or "holier than thou" and thus he had faith in what he thought to be right.

The first man may have used what God gave mankind, but has used it in a way that God did not intend, thus erasing God from the picture. While I could understand that happening, I think the second person would be more pleasing to God.

I think God loves both men equally, but I think He appreciates the humble, lowly man more. God does want us to utilize the gifts He gave us, but in this particular case, the man was not NOT utilizing his... his problems were not self inflicted or mental laziness. Rabinadrath Tagore said " God respects me when I work, but He loves me when I sing". Perhaps this handicapped man was singing when the intelligent man was not! :)

The man who loved God with all his heart.

Lamentations 3:25
The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;

God can give man understanding of salvation- faith comes from hearing, and hearing the word of God- Romans 10:17- and He has written His existence on the heart of every man. See Romans 1:20.

Joshua 23:11
So be very careful to love the LORD your God.

Put God in a box and you won't be able to come out of the box yourself.
The Gospel is for you to follow and not to make "smart" reasoning with it.

I think God appreciate them both because they both have an opportunity to draw closer to Him, and come into a sincere relationship with Him.
