I live near Nottingham, where the A50 and M1 meet, they are talking of charging for these two roads. If this goes ahead I know that drivers will soon discover the small country roads near me and will use those to get to Nottingham instead of being charged.
This will not only shift the congestion but will make villages more dangerous as drivers use these rat runs.
Still the government will claim a success as the main routes will be less congested, as you say all they will really have done is moved the problem and not actually dealt with it.

More than likely as people try to avoid the tolls, but the extra hassle will then start to make it worth paying to go on empty roads

Yes. People with sat-navs will program it to avoid toll roads, no doubt this will become a selling feature of these systems.

NO charges are acceptable, after we have paid road taxes already and TOO high a tax on petro;.
