Would you be prepared to pay road tax only on the petrol you use? I would and let the pple who use the roads more, pay more tax, only fair I think. Put tax on petrol.

Yes I know everyone uses the road, but my question was "pay tax only on the petrol used by yourself". Some people use their car every day and some only at weekends. Weekend users would only pay tax on petrol used at weekends.

I see where you're coming from but there are some advantages in having the present system (Gosh, I certainly know how to make myself unpopular)
This is similar to the supply of gas or electricity where we pay a fixed amount to contribute to the infrastructure and a variable amount according to our usage.
Having the road tax system allows for the maintenance of a register of vehicles, and helps to enforce the MOT and insurance rules. It ensures that everyone who owns a vehicle pays a minimum amount regardless of the actual use as there are costs involved in maintaining a road system even if it is not being used.
Having said that I, personally, would support a move to abolish the road tax and increase the duty on petrol The tax disc could be replaced with an MOT disc which would help to maintain the monitoring of vehicles.

I dont have a car..its not cost effective.
I work 12 hour shifts...4 0n 4 Off...
The car would be used less than 6 hours a week.
Tax on petrol and insurance ONLY when it is actually on the road, sounds good to me.

In some way weather you drive a car or not you use the roads. If you ever go into a Grocery store and buy milk you used the road in a round about way. Everything we buy was transported there by using our roads.

Road tax is a valuable source of income for the government they are unlikely to abolish it - the money raised from the road-tax goes directly to the exchequer and not into improving transport.

even as i kinda agree that we'd want to continually do something to provide up tax dodgers, i dont imagine that's the answer, my clarification for that's that the fee to known human beings will be huge and why might want to us regulation abiding human beings might want to pay in case you dont? we pay adequate in this usa to authentic scroungers, immigrants, convicts and so on.... and slowly yet truly everyone looks starting up to of had adequate of it. in case you idea became placed into position, there will be uproar. for some reason, the authorities seem to imagine that by taxing human beings it's going to make issues extra useful...further money isn't the answer. I advise who the hell idea-about a tax on emmisions? what balls....what does the further money they benefit benefit? no longer lots truly in case you imagine about. human beings will nevertheless purchase the 4x4 for countless causes like a huge family contributors, artwork, practicality and so on... in the adventure that they pick to provide up highway tax dodgers, then make it more less costly. that way extra human beings will be keen to pay for it and they could locate that the better human beings finding out to purchase it's going to make up the shortfall in cost. on the different hand, they ought to make the fines larger for dodgers to act as a deterrant and randomly examine vehicles that are declared SORN. human beings purely avert tax because there is little danger they receives stuck. make that danger larger then they are going to pay up. you would possibly want to even tie in highway tax to coverage. its a techniques too basic to get an coverage cert at the moment. perchance coverage will be bought with a valid replica from the placed up workplace of the tax disc or something, or perhaps contemporary the tax disc or an digital card with motor vehicle tax archives on at a petroleum station or they cant purchase petrol.
