I've noticed people putting 4 packets in a cup of coffee and I wonder if it really makes a difference or if they might as well have used sugar.

If you don't have a condition, such as diabetes, that it would be harmful to eat sugar you are better to use sugar than artificial sweeteners. The sweeteners send the wrong signals to the body and will actually increase your craving for sweets. Sugar should not be eaten in large quantities though as it is high in carbs and will enter the system very fast because it is a simple carb. The biggest risk with sugar is weight gain if over consumed.

i do know artificial sweeteners have less calories than sugar.
i feel stevia is the best.
but the problem is that they really don't satisfy the body's craving for sugar. it send the wrong signals to your body to eat artificial sweet (though i do it sometimes).
i read a book once (before splenda and stevia) and basically concluded that with all the chemicals and risks, it's better to just eat sugar. But that was before i was overweight and struggling with weight issues.
it does make a difference in calories, which causes obesity.

Splenda is made from sugar and tastes just like it. It measures like sugar, though much lighter. It does not bake the same way as sugar so you may have to substitute some of it with sugar when baking, especially in cookies.
