Santa is an amagalmation of a Christian saint and some Norse myths. Part of the seasonal celebration in pre-Christain Europe involved a gift giving elf, sometimes a goat, (or a goat pulled sled), sometimes a Norse god (even Odin himself has been attributed).

Based on the behaviors associated with this fictional character, I would assume he has Christian values. He is loosly based on Saint Nicholas who is a catholic saint and thus Christian. St. Nick is still the prevailing "Christmas" character in most of Europe and Santa is america's version.

But really, its Santa, the ONE guy who appeals to all religions, colors, and sexual orientations, can you really label him anything other than pretty cool?

No. He is Satan. Just move the N around in his name.
He wears red and breaks into peoples houses while they sleep. He makes little boys and girls sit on his lap. What, a letter to the North Pole isn't good enough? What, he can't just leave the gifts on the porch?

St. Nicholas presumably was.

but a man living with elves and reindeer who seems more based in Scandinavian lore than Mediterranean (like St. N) is probably closer to a pagan prototype.
