He is a struggling college student, but managed to send me 125.00 for his dog's vet care. Currently I cannot afford any extra expenditures. Please tell me what I need to ask the vet to do. The dog is very active, eats well and has no visible problems. I know he needs a rabies shot........but what else should I get for 125.00? We cannot afford to get everything. We are good people so please don't bash us and say : Don't have pets unless you can afford them. We feed, bathe and love the dog, he sleeps on my bed. He is kept inside and goes out only for potty. Oh, he did have all his puppy shots and wormers. He is 3 years old today. Hondo lived at college with my son for 2.5 years and now he is home with us ,my son is taking 18 hours and felt bad that he could not spend a lot of time with him. So we have him for a while. Hondo has not spread his boxer love around either.

If I had a $125.00 to spend on my dog I would do the following:

Rabies Vaccine
Distemper Vaccine
Heartworm Test
Heartworm Prevention Tablets

You can always do the other things later on when your cash flow is better. Good Luck.

Do some research on the internet to find out what is recommended each year for dogs in your area. I normally have my dog treated for only rabies, heartworm, and distemper but that is also because he is never boarded, where they require more shots, and where I live, there isn't even a real need for heart worm, but I do that to be on the safe side. Even just call your vet and ask what your pet is due for, they can't charge you for asking a question over the phone.

Another idea, but it may not be available to you. In my state we have a college that specializes in training vets. I took my pet there for surgery because it is a teaching school. A certified vet performed the surgery, but students assissted or watched! They can do regular check ups and give all the normal treatment but because of it being a teaching facility you pay much less than a regular vet. However, in my opinion, my pet received better treatment than I have seen in other vet's offices!!

Good luck!!!

I'm not bashing you, but dogs are expensive to keep and properly care for. Please think hard about your future with this dog, and what you will do in case an accident happens and your dog breaks a leg, or if your dog gets sick. Look into setting aside some money (as little as 5$ per week) or getting some pet insurance, because it is your responsibility to care for this dog as you would your own children, and includes any financial burdens that may result.

Anyway, talk to your vet about what to do with that money. Tell him you have exactly 125$ to spend on vet care for the dog, and he will do what is best. He will probably give your dog a thorough examination, as well as any vaccines he needs. Is your dog neutered? He may suggest that, as well.

Just take him to the vet for a checkup, that normally costs about $40 where i live. Find out from that vet what shots your dog needs. Then, you can call your local animal shelter to find out how to get discount vaccinations. The animal shelter (or another nearby organization) will offer vaccinations at half the price (normally, all of them as a package cost about $55)! You will save a lot of money and have some left over to save for your dog's next vet visit.

I would say the rabies shot - it's the law. But also, think about getting him neutered. Neutered males are healthier and live longer on average. (An intact male is prone to testicular cancer, amongst other things.) He will be a calmer, happier dog neutered. And by the way - it will NOT change his personality or make him fat. That's a myth.

Be up front with a good vet - say you need a neuter and a rabies shot, and you have $125. Many will try to work with you.

hi there! I am a Veterinary Technician at a local animal clinic here in Georgia. I would recommend that you get the dogs shots up to date (rabies & parvo being the most vital...) as well as a fecal flotation to make sure he doesnt have any intestinal parasites, in which you would have to deworm him. A heartworm test is optional since the dog is so young, and if he has already had a negative heartworm test, he is not likey to have heartworms. I would also say to get frontline, advantix (i use advantix on my dogs) or some other flea preventative to keep the fleas and ticks off of him. The price is based on the dogs weight.

Tell the vet the situation. They can give the dog the shots that are the most important for him to have and usually it's rabies which doesn't have to be given every year.

Well, it depends on the area, and if he is due for any vaccinations, but around here $125 would be more than enough for a yearly physical. Unless the vet finds something abnormal, that is all that is necessary.

You have a very caring son. Just hold on to the money until the dog needs something, or an emergency comes up. You're son is to be admired. He is not just dumping his dog on you. Good luck, seems you are doing a good job of taking care of your sons dog.
