Yes, in fact it is the system people use to record the pronunciation of Chinese characters with Romanized alphabets in PRC and many overseas Chinese community. Nowadays most beginners of the Chinese language are taught Hanyu Pinyin, even in Taiwan, where native Chinese speakers are taught 注音符號 (another system to record the pronunciation of Chinese characters that does not use Romanizations) instead of Hanyu Pinyin.
