It all depends on what you want from a pet & the type of little dog that you want to have around.

This site may help, it contains reviews of breeds written by actual owners of the breed ... sometimes bad reviews as well as good:

http://www.hoflin.com/BR/Pugs
http://www.hoflin.com/BR/Shih%20Tzu

It may help you to make up your mind as to which you would consider to be the better pet. Though, if I were you & had the time & the money, I'd be tempted to get one of each!

Different breeds have different qualities. Some are more active than others and require more exercise. Some take more time to housebreak. Some are good with kids, while others may not be so good around children. I would use the internet to research the two breeds to see which one best fits your lifestyle. I have been around several pugs in my life and from what I know of most of them...they have energy. I am a jack russell person myself. I have two. The pug definitely doesn't compare energy-wise to the Jack. I do not know much about shitzus. Another consideration is puppy versus an adult dog. Visit your local shelter or visit pug and shitzu rescue sites. I adopted my one jack from the Humane Society. He was three at the time. He is fun and playful, but luckily he was house-broken and didn't chew things up, which made it easy for me. I also experienced the puppy Jack that I got from a friend. I prefer adopting an adult dog. Puppies are fun, but require so much time, energy, and persistence.

Hope this helps.

Both are wonderful breeds, however, there are pros and cons to both. Both tend to have breathing problems although Pugs are a little worse. Both have sweet and playful personalities. Shitzus do require regular grooming but don't shed. Pugs require very little grooming but they shed like crazy! I think both have the same activity levels but you might want to check out some breeder sites to find out more details. Good luck and I'm sure whichever breed you choose you'll have a fun and loyal pet.

Shitzu

They are two very different maintenance levels. You may want to do some online/book research to see which breed better suits your lifestyle. Because of their face shapes, both have a tendency towards eye, skin and breathing issues. While you don't have to maintain the Shih Tzu with a long flowing "show" type coat, they do have hair which grows and must be groomed regularly. Pugs don't need nearly as much body grooming, but as they have a more pronounced "smush" to their face, they have alot of maintenance issues as far as eye and skin issues, as well as breathing issues. Again, I would recommend doing some research to see which would fit better with your lifestyle. Best of luck, the toy breeds are great entertainment and fun, and either would be a good addition to your family/home.

Pugs will require less grooming and take less time and money. I have to take my Shitzu's to the groomer about every six weeks and it can be costly but they are worth it and if you have time and money for them I think they are great. They are so smart and easy to teach and very loving pets.

Shitzu. Pugs are not easy to house train, and they're noisy breathers.

But if that doesn't bother you, then just go with what you prefer, and what will work best for your lifestyle. Each breed has its own pros and its own cons.

A better pet for you? Or better pet for folks responding to your question? Understand that these are two entirely different breeds, with different temperaments and different care requirements. You have to find out all you can about each breed and weigh that information against your own lifestyle.
That's how to figure out the best breed for you.

There is no universal "Better pet".

There is however, a better pet for your own situation. I suggest you go to dogbreedinfo.com and read up on the temperment of each dog. Really think about what may suit your lifestyle better! Consider the potential health and training issues each one has.
