We sort of are doing that. It is called bio fuel. Methanol is wood alcohol and is one possible automotive fuel. But wood is running out too. We can't grow enough trees fast enough to replace all the oil.

This old earth has been recycling our air with plants ,and trees . the Plants take in CO2 and give us back oxygen. Well that is the beginning of why we will not run out of oil,the other side of the plants is the leaves ,stems etc wash down the rivers to the delta where it deteriorates in to oil,gas , and after a long time to coal. it is being continually recycled all the time.

It isn't practical. Every car and truck and plane would have to carry a load of wood to burn, you would have to harvest the wood and transport it to power plants around the world. You'd also have to insure that the trees were only cut at a rate at which they could be replaced by new trees....See some of the problems?

you're right. there is a lot of wood in the rain forest. we should all probably go ahead and harvest it as quickly as possible. i wouldn't worry about the oil. after the human race consumes all of earth's resources, we will become extinct. over the next several million years, our bodies will form the next batch of petroleum. so you see, in the long run, it won't matter if we run out of oil. the earth will still be here.
