Put them up December 24 and take them down December 26. And it is CHRISTMAS tree, not Xmas, sheesh.

I have seen people put up their Christmas lights November 1st and never take them down.

BUILDERS! Here's an idea: make a new home contruction with an optional built-in Christmas tree light package with the lights already built into the exterior trim arounf the roof, doors, and windows. Sell the package as a way to save thousands of hours of senseless labor over 30 years of home ownership. As an extra, a pop-up fake Christmas tree that rises up out of the floor, fully decorated, at the touch of a button. Think of the times savings this would mean!

You can put them up any time from the first Sunday in Advent (which this year is 3rd December) to Christmas Eve (24 December).

Conventional good manners says the later the better, and keep it simple. Contemporary bling culture says the sooner the better and big it up. Which you prefer is up to you!

You take them down any time from Boxing Day (26 December) to Twelfth Night (6 January).

We usually put a wreath on the door from about 10 December but don't start other decorations (paper chains etc) til about 20 December. We decorate the tree on Christmas Eve. We keep the decorations up until Twelfth Night.

Traditionally the tree and decorations were not put up until Christmas Eve and were taken down before twelfth night (12 days after Christmas) and so should come down night of the 5th of January. It is supposed to be bad luck to take them down after this and they should stay all year if you've not taken them down by the 5th.

Nowadays people want to show off their home throughout December and you can see people putting up decorations as early as 1st December although I see this as a little vulgar and would advise waiting until at least the 12th of December.

Please say no to the giant inflatable snowman on the lawn and the light up reindeer on the roof - it's not cool, it's wasting electricity.

In Philippines they start from September to Jan. 7 after 3 kings celebration. But now days not all people decorate that early anymore. I guess it's nice to put up decoration by Dec 1 then take them down Jan.2

Put them up anytime after Thanksgiving and take them down by January 15th.

BTW: It's a Christmas tree, NOT an Xmas tree.

How many times has this question been asked in the last couple of weeks???? It does NOT matter when you put up your Christmas decorations or tree. It's up to the individual themselves. Just enjoy the Christmas season and stop worrying. Its a time for enjoying, not wreaking your head on are you doing the right thing. Merry Christmas!!!

i have a strong opinion on this which usually drives everyone crazy.
do not put up Christmas decorations before December. (exception: many people put up decorations after Thanksgiving since they have time off from work. Understood, but leave the lights off till December 1)
Christmas decorations should be promptly removed no later than January 1.

This is one of my pet peeves, to see Halloween decorations still up, today, or the Christmas village next door which has shown bright since before Thanksgiving!

It all depends on how eager you are to get them up or down. My family has a tradition of going out on Christmas Eve day and finding and cutting down our tree, and then decorating it before bedtime. Then we take it down New Year's Day.

My mother's household tradition was 2 weeks before Christmas and take it down the day after New Year.

Make your own tradition.. do it whenever you want too.

Traditionally, decorations should be up for the twelve days of Christmas only. This means that they go up on 24th December and come down on 4th Jan.
