Shopping is getting easier and better all the time. In 1979 you could not buy any coffee or even get a carrier bag to put your purchases in. Tampons did not become generally available until the end of the 80s.

Now there is no limit to what you can buy. Hypermarkets and shopping malls abound. There is even IKEA!!!

EDIT : I took the question to mean shopping for REAL goods, others have interpreted it as shopping for tourist tat. Be advised that tourists can (and should) bargain in any kind of market environment - the covered bazaar in Istanbul, carpet shops etc, but it doesn't work and may cause offence in other (more standard/local) environments. I've observed a culture clash when an (American) tourist tried to bargain in the gift shop of a museum where the prices are fixed and controlled by the government. Basically - do not try to get one over on the seller. If it's worth it to you, pay what you think it's worth. Maybe you might be able to get it cheaper, but if you are happy with your purchase and the seller is also, that's good!

If you are a tourist, especially from Western Europe or USA, Canada, bazaar is a great experience, if you like that kind of stuff. They will try to overprice everything, from carpets, leather, fake chanel bags, jewelery, souvenirs...you have to bargain. There is a great chance that something starts with the price 100$ and ends up with the price 20$. Don't be lazy to bargain, but you need to spend some time for that activity, you can't just enter the shop and buy things:) They will give you tons of compliments, especially if you are a woman:) Basically they are very friendly and they will offer you (apple) tea when you buy in their shop, it is slightly different from english tea. People I know were buying leather stuff, jackets etc, cotton is of great quality also, golden jewelry, carpets...

If u decide to buy something, you have to ask 3 or more shops not to pay much money. Do not believe if they say "€100", it can be "€20" if u are a good bargainer, becoz the prices are determined as a bargaining system in markets and small shops in Türkiye.

Always bargain. You can sometimes get what you want less than half of the original price. If the shop owner doesnt give you a good discount just walk away,he will probably call you back .If not try another shop

It's great, if u have a level head and some idea of the value of what u r buying. The annoying part is the aggressiveness of the salesman. They will. in some cases. literally try to drag u into their shop.

Well...I was disappointed, cuz I thought everything was a bit expensive, but it depends on what you are looking for...if its touristy things, the grand bazaar in istanbul is an experience. Its fun and easy to "barter" your way into a deal. If you want them to lower teir prices, pretend to walk off. It helps if you are a hot woman though lol! They are very persistent on the street and when I was with my dad, the vendors were "hello nice couple" it drove me crazy!!! There are tourist traps of course in the Sultan Ahmet area, but if you cross the bhosphorous into Kadikoy, it will have more authentic turkish stuff and people living their daily lives....its one of the coolest places I think!!

There are a lot of scams concerning carpets. The salesman will tell you they are hand woven, but they are made in a factory.
