Well, it depends on what rate schedule you're on. For Hawaiian Electric Co. (which serves Oahu), the average cost of electricity for a residential customer was 17.67 cents per kilowatt-hour, 13.76 cents per kilowatt-hour for a large power business, 15.44 cents/kWh for a medium power business, and 18.96 cents/kWh for a small power business.

Rates are not the same for all categories of customers. Why? It’s because the rates are based on the cost of serving each category. It costs more on a cost per kilowatt-hour basis to serve residential and small business customers than it does to serve business customers consuming large amounts of electricity.
