yeah - it can be a bi*tch!

I was prescribed Colofac but this didn't work AT ALL. I tried herbal teas, strong prescribed painkillers and meditation techniques as i have a very stressful job. Nothing works - sods law I think.

You have to start at the beginning. Stop taking everything and then see what affects it. You may have a perfect balance one month and something that changes (which you wouldn't necessaily notice) may trigger it again.

It may have been a particularly stressful time of your life that triggered it off and now you need something to put your guts into their natural rhythm. Has anyone mentioned Buscopan? That worked reasonabley well for me.

Best of luck and big love! x x

That seems to be a common pattern with IBS, you will have bouts of it (stress will exacerbate it or bring it on) then you can go for months without it.
There is a new drug out that relieves the symptoms, it's called Colofac, I haven't used it as my bouts are very few and far between however I know people that do and some swear by it and others aren't too impressed by it.

You may find this link of some use.

You may find relief by assuming the knee chest position. Gravity will allow the transverse colon to slide back up toward the head and release the crimp at the flexure of the descending colon.. The accumulation of gas will blow up the colon. That is the only way it will initiate pain. Distention. The decreasing of this problem will allow a more normal evacuation.

Stress is a very large part of IBS. Diet is another large part. Spicy, greasy foods are the most harmful. Eat a lot of high fiber food. Keep your bowels moving regularly and strive for soft formed stools. Taking Citracel or Metamucil might help. These also come in pill form for convenience. Your doctor can prescribe other medications for it also. Eat a lot of apples, bananas and other high fiber fruits. Try to reduce the stress as much as possible and learn relaxation techniques to deal with the unavoidable stress. Train your mind to relax if possible. It helps mine.

I use colofac and buscopan 3 times daily.....that really helps. Try massaging your tummy with a tennis ball when the pain is bad as well as using a hot water bottle. I find laying out flat helps ease the agonising pains.

Although there are many underlying causes of IBS, they're actually starting to say that anyone diagnosed with IBS, or anyone with symptoms of IBS should be checked for celiac disease. Here's a link to the information by the National Institutes of health about celiac.

If that sounds like something that may be going on there are a couple of really good message boards that you can visit to find out more information.

I hope you feel better soon.

You need a anti spasm tablet like colofac or buscopan. Not eing personal, but does it happen if you make love during your fertile time of the month because thats when your cervix drops and it might be that you have knocked yourself.... I've been hospitalised three times cause of it but the tablets work great... keep well x

Believe it or not a steady daily dose of a fiber supplement. Depends on which of the IBS you have. You can take the fiber for diarrhea (it will bind it together and make it more solid) and for constipation (it will make it easier to pass). Also, stress can bring it on.

It is caused by stress. For immediate relief drink peppermint tea. Steep 2 peppermint teabags in boiling water for 5 minutes and then drink. It really works.
