Not for the sake of digestion,no.What happens is you dilute the enzymes that break the macronutrients down to smaller parts.
Protein's peptide bonds are broken to release the free form amino acids, carbohydrate chains are shortened to glucose and fats are reduced to triglycerides. These enzymes are not always acids either.Things like amylase and lipase are bases,on the opposite side of the PH scale.
All of these things happen because of the enzymatic breakdown. The water is needed for many of the biological functions that take place after the food is digested, but has a potentially negative effect on digestion.
Metabolism and digestion are two completely different, but connected functions.Metabolism is the conversion of these nutrients to energy.According to a recent clinical study comsuming 17 ounces of water will increase metabolism by 30%,yet did not have a positive effect on digestion. They were unable to determine how long this rise in metabolism lasted.

Actually, it's not necessarily healthier. Drinking water before a meal is suggested as a means to avoid overeating.

Drinking water throughout the day, however, is definitely healthy. You should drink enough so that your urine is pale in color or even clear.

Drinking water when you are thirsty is too late: you are already dehydrated.

The one thing to watch with drinking water before your meal is this: if you drink too much, you end up diluting the stomach acids which in effect make it more difficult to digest your food... so you walk around a bit bloated.

Actually for digestion sake- i've heard and read in the newspaper if you drink hot tea or drink a hot liquid AFTER eating a meal- it's the best way. Because the hot/ warm liquid binds and pulls the fat molecules down your digestion tract a LOT easily and helps that away.
The whole thing about drinking a glass of water before you eat- just has to do with making you fill full a lot quiker while you're eating your meal- it doesn't help with digestion though .

Yes, because it helps start the body's metabolism, especially if the water is cold, and it helps you feel fuller than you wold if you ate on an empty stomach. Water helps carry the nutrients to the body, which is why you should drink it before, during, and after you eat something.

Drinking water before eating only helps you feel fuller so that you don't eat as much. To aid digestion, it's better to drink water after you finish your meal.
