An interesting question, it would be great to have a more indepth study to find out. My own experience and hypothesis is that as people become more educated and look more critically at the literal truthfulness of the religion they grew up in they become skeptical. Science has provided us with many natural explanation for things that we could only explain supernaturally before. Once people realize that the things they were told in religion are questionable they also may question the foundation of it all, God. Then people realize that they are still able to live happy and fulfilled lives without mythology so they come to a place where they are content to live without absolutes on the question. I haven't seen these poll results and I don't know how reliable they are. I had heard it was something between 80-90% were believers. It would be refreshing to hear some different news.

Well, take a look around you. The world is so messed up. Rich people continue to make more money by making movies and songs, and unimportant things, while there are millions starving. There are millions who can't get a job.
Once again look around you. Everything being made now-a-days is about sex. Diseases are sweeping through the world. Natural disasters are happening all over the place.
Personally I tihnk that if there was such a forgiving God, and a God who loves us all and wouldn't let us suffer, then most of these things wouldn't be happening. You see, I'm not saying that this is the first time any of this happens. Bad things have existed as long as men have existed. What I'm trying to say is that maybe people are finally starting to think this way, and wonder why the world is the way it is, and realizing that there might not be a God after all.

americans are always unsure, except those methodists and evangelicals. i think these unsure guys are more or less correct in thier assessment. but they are not taking a bold decision.
when people read holy books many overlook those glaring defects becuse it is said to be the word of god. but there is half the humanity who will go through it, analyze it. they find out that these are blabberings of a mad man. it cannot be true and does not have any facts to support.
probably that is the reason the percentage has moved up to 42%.

I've taken several college statistics classes and the results of a pole have more to do with the person asking the questions than the person responding. Other poles show the number of people in the USA that believe in God has gone up.
Are you ready?

That's funny, because the same Harris poll that I found on their website says the number is much lower than that. Here's the link:

Where do you get your facts from?
Hey Larry you moron - If you scroll down towards the chart halfway down the webpage you will discover that as of 2006 - 73% of Americans believe in God. Yes, I can read very well. You're making yourself out to be more of a fool everytime you post something.

There are many polls that are showing this change. I have wondered why too. Did you know that the average IQ in the USA has been going up 3 points every ten years? I think the two have something to do with each other.
If you go to the website, you find his numbers are acurate, but it's alway more complex. Poles are poles, you cant take them as 100% fact. I would say it's probably mostly acurate. :)

My guess would be that they have simply become disillusioned with the state of the world and have given up trying to hold onto a faith they see as not helping them out. I have not lost my faith, I simply am stating what I have been told by some who have lost their faith.

Thats because the scienific evidence that proves God exist isn't being shown by the media. The governement is only feeding us what they want. Not what is always true.

I can imagine that in light of all the blight that has plagued the world, it can make people unsure if a God exists. I am positive that there is a God. I just don't understand His will sometimes.
