If you want to understand the answer to this question read the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm
The sum of it is that alcohol wins all the prizes for dangers to society. It causes more problems than all the illegal drugs combined -- by several orders of magnitude. The comparison isn't even close.
We tried prohibiting alcohol to address those problems. It only made matters much worse. For some interesting information on that particular topic, see http://druglibrary.org/prohibitionresults.htm Among other things, it caused a huge crime wave and the biggest teen drinking epidemic this country has ever seen.
At one time all of the currently illegal drugs were entirely legal and sold over the counter without restriction. There were no labeling requirements so people didn't even know what they were buying and kids could buy cocaine and heroin as easily as they could buy aspirin today. Even under those conditions we did not have the problems that we do today. Addicts were not criminals and the rate of addiction wasn't much different than it is today.
The major problems with these drugs didn't start until they were made illegal and the control of the market was turned over to criminals. Within ten years of the time the laws were passed, medical societies across the nation were publishing editorials saying what a disaster the laws were. In response, instead of repealing the laws, they made the laws tougher and the problem worse. If you read the CU Report, above, it will become clear what happened.
Every major study of the drug laws in the last 100 years has said that prohibition is the wrong approach. As one study said, the more dangerous you assume these drugs to be, the more important it becomes to treat them in a non-criminal manner -- because making them illegal only drives the problem underground where it is harder for ordinary social services to deal with the problem.
You can find the full text of those studies at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer under Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy. The evidence is conclusive to anyone who actually cares to read it. The problem you will find with most of the answers you will get is that none of these people have read the most basic research on the subject.

That is a very difficult question to answer.
Every drug including some 'natural' remedies carries its own risks so they should ALL be controlled.
It isn't the drug on its own that causes the problem but the misuse of it. I know Cannabis use can cause Mental Illness in young people but Aspirin (commonly available) can Cause Raynauds Disease.Young people in both cases.
Should they be fully legalised NO I dont think they should.
Should Alcohol be banned NO It has been proved in America it doesn't work!
So what would be the answer> All drugs should be Controlled Substances!

Its sad how much the government lies to the public and even sadder that most people are stupid enough to believe it. 90% of people have never done real reasearch about drugs (yes that incldudes alcohol, alcohol is a drug just because you drink it instead of smoking it or snorting it doesnt make it any less of a drug, not to mention how addictive or bad for your liver it is) so when they formulate opinions about drugs, they are either talking out their ***, or they are ignorant and just regurgitate the lies they have been fed. Any of those drugs could be refined and purified by the government and sold at safe doses in safe ways. But the government is making an *** load of money arresting addicts, and that takes less work. It has also been proven that eating marijuana is one of the safest and healthiest things you can do. 0 negative side effects. No schitzo anything, no memory loss, it doesnt kill your brain cells, those are all lies that DARE is feeding our kids. I gotta get out of this country before thats illegal too. The government is so corrupt and all they care about is power and money. Our founding fathers are rolling in their graves. So i say yes, legalize, and be good ******* parents, and raise your own damn kids right and quit blaming everyone else for their own neglegence. Go to amsterdam, its all legal over there and they are doin great.

I think all illegal drugs should be made available in a "controlled environment". I know a lot of people will disagree and think this is madness, but think about it for a minute. A drug addict will get his/her fix in any way they can, often committing crime which causes misery and suffering to many innocent people. A drug addict will simply not stop taking drugs because they can't afford it, so if they could just go to a "centre", similar to say a doctors surgery, and get their drugs they would not have to go to a drug dealer and give over large amounts of cash. So therefore by legalising, or for want of a better word "controlling" illegal drugs this has a twofold effect.
1. Crime would be cut by a huge amount, thus money spent on crime detection, crime prevention, court cases etc.etc. etc could be spent on providing the drugs and the running of the centres.
2. Drug Suppliers would go out of business overnight.

I don't think it should be, however, I do think the weed will be. It's already being used as a medicine and there have been no deaths directly associated with it or any documented overdoses. It has already been legalized in other countries and as soon as the government creates a way to control the import/export and tax it they will legalize in. Once that happens it will be too costly to afford. I don't think alcohol should be banned, just consumed in moderation. As far as cocaine, that should not be legalized because of the possibility of overdosing and death.

yeah, lets legalize all these hard drugs and bann alcohol.Thay will definitly raise the crime numbers. Have people breaking into places of bussiness because joe blow is over here feenen.Or instead of flashing a gun at the bank people would be flashing guns at these stores and saying,"open the safe and give me all the weed ya got". Come on now, just think what it woukd do to the world, as if it isnt already in bad shape.

Would banning alcohol stop you from drinking? Not likely. It speaks rather poorly of anyone who thinks they have be drinking or drunk to have fun. Drinking and drugs do not solve any problems. They create problems. Alcohol is a drug. Calling yourself an alcoholic is a polite way of saying you are addicted. Drug addiction is self chosen slavery. You are a slave to a substance.

Take action to cure your addiction then. But just because you are not addicted to the rest does not mean they are safe.
Look at Bel Mooney, spent years campaigning to have cannabis legalised and now has a son in psychiatric care due to psycosis brought on by cannabis use.
Guess who doesn't want it legalised any more

Haven't they just proven that weed can caused mental health issues such as bi-polar and schitzophenia (chronic spelling, sorry but multiple personality disorders)? Wht legalise something that could potenially cause more problem just as bad, if not worse than alcohol related ones.
Cocaine and amphetamines are addictive, if they weren't people like Kate Moss and Daniella Westbrook wouldn't have the problems they did.

Your merely attempting to rationalize marijuana use by declaring alcohols faults. i in my opinion have confidence alcohol is effective moderately merely as marijuana is. yet i think of that alcohol's prohibition would in no way artwork, we tried it as quickly because it didnt artwork (in the final century), we tried a similar factor with marijuana it didnt precisely artwork the two. You wont get everywhere from banning alcohol, for the reason that human beings will merely save bootlegging it like they used to. And truthfully, marijuana isnt merely the "ask your self" drug that each and every physique makes it out to be, no drug is something which would be celebrated in my view. drugs are purely meant for use to forget your issues on a friday night consistent with hazard one or 2 friday nights a month.
