Almost daily I have someone that gets mad at me for asking for ID before I sell them alcohol or tobacco. I even had a couple tell me last night that I was out of line to ask for proof of age, and had no right to deny the sale. I told her I can deny any sale for any reason... she got agitated and I had to have police remove her. This is not an isolated incident. Why are people so ignorant?

Because people are lazy. They don't want to pull their ID out....or maybe their ID is expired and they were too lazy to get a new one....or maybe they aren't really of legal age.

I don't understand it, either. The only time it irritates me is when I left it in the car....but STILL I understand that it is my issue that it is in the car----not the person ringing me up!! The clerk is only doing his job, afterall!!

I worked security at a night club a few years ago and I can tell you this was an ongoing problem by people that became angry for being carded both at the entrance and again when they purchase drinks at the bar.

What they failed to realize was the penalty for us if they happened to be underage and ATF came in, (and believe me they did come in) we could lose our liquor license, not to mention a huge fine.

The ones that usually raised any stink were the ones that "forgot" their ID and had to be turned away.

It was a pain in the butt for us, but a necessary process that has to be followed.

Why do they take offense? I don't know. Some already have a personal problem before they ever get to the ID check. There isn't anything you can do about it. It is what it is and last but not least, the law.

Finally somebody that knows what I'm going through. I work in a convience store where we have to card people too. I have been cussed out every name in the book and then some over I.D.

One time someone got so mad, they went out back outside after cussing at me over asking for ID, and threw a baseball bat, the old wooden kind thru the front doors of the store and it went half way across the store and almost hit a customer.

We have plenty of "We Card" (California program that advertises to "show your ID please") posters, signs etc and when people get really nasty I point to the signs.

What I also hate is when they think because they dont have their ID, they can ask some old lady etc to buy for them. They realllllllllly become agitated then. Like I said I've been cussed out every name there is, and also challenged to go outside to fight, all over I.D.

I just refuse the sale. NO I.D, NO MARLBOROS! sorry!

We have to be especially carefull because if we are caught in a sting operation (Yes they do several a week here in California) we can be fined up to a thousand dollars and the store gets fined also, and if we sell alcohol in a sting, we will be arrested.

I also refused to sell anything to someone that cusses me out. No respect, get out of the store!

Also for the above posted, they just upped it. California state law is to card if they appear to be under age 35.
I also believe its the people that insist that they dont have their ID that they really dont because theyve had DUIs and are on probation. My friend has had a previous DUI and they take your actual license away in court. Thats why they get so furious, because they really do not have I.D.

That is a really good question, and kind of funny to. I didn't know people did this, you would think every one would know they have to show id because now days it is posted, for instance at the gas station it says right in the door as you are walking in that they are going to card everyone. I even went into a restaurant the other day and posted right there as I was walking in... We card Everyone! Interesting, maybe the ones getting upset have something to hide? I don't have an answer for you just suggestions. People can be so strange. Next time someone gets upset ask them why they are upset? You might aggitate them more but it'll give you something to laugh about!

I think some people see it as a hindrance, but they should know it is the law and that you can card anyone you think is under the age, and it is completely legal up to card someone up to age 30, right? It's your job on the line, as well as the company you work for and their license to sell alcohol and cigarettes.

Maybe your company can put out a sign that states this law that you can ID anyone?

Don't let it bother you. You won't make everyone in this world happy. But hopefully there are enough nice people out there you won't really care! :)

I was a bartender for 8 years and I always found that it was the people who were either too young or had fake ID's that caused problems. I'm flattered now when I get asked for my ID, it just seems that it's the early to mid 20's age group that gets pissy. They're just immature and don't understand or don't know that there are legal ramifications to you the seller should you sell to an under-age individual.

I do agree with a lot of other people's answers, I think people are just lazy or they have bad attitudes. It is not just cigarettes and beer either. I work at a video store and if you don't have your card, which most people don't, then I have to see an ID. People can get so pissed about that. I tell them I don't know who you are, do you want me to rent out movies on your account to just anybody? Do you want to pay for them? I have never had to call the police on anybody but I think a lot of people don't have respect for cashiers/clerks and want to be in and out and don't care about your job. People are so self centered and feel entitled to special treatment anymore that rules are annoyances!

Chances are they weren't of age, that's why they were so upset. I'm 22 and get carded most of the time, but at places where the waitress knows me it's not a problem. Some people also don't want their true age known. You have to card anyone that appears to be under 30. It's a compliment, she and he should have taken it as such.

I'm a Notary Public and I get the same thing. I just tell them I will lose my license if I don't see some ID. Sometimes it works and other times they just walk out (oh well).
In your case, where you are asking for their age, they may not want you to know their age. In my case, I think they are just lazy and don't want to be bothered digging it out of their wallets.
