Because oranges are orange. And bananas are fingers. At least in Arabic which is where the word comes from. Vocabulary comes from infinite sources and is almost random so there is no logic behind it.

Why does a burglar alarm go off as it goes on?
A teacher taught but a preacher praught?
Fill in a form as you fill it out.
A house burns up as it burns down.
A Guinea Pig isn't a pig nor does it come from Guinea.
There are thousands of absurdities because of the randomness of how words are coined.
Does Guinea mean the country, a monetary value a region of latitude who knows? The Japs call some fish (can't remember which) a sea-chicken. Though it looks nothing like a chicken.
So the word orange probably comes from someone who had no imagination.

I'd have called it a homschnitwort.
