six, if youy don't count the indian wars of genocide by the us army during the 19th century. if you count them, the number increases to over forty, but some were declared several times, especially when whites wanted the gold on indian lands they recieved by treaty, which the us broke so the miners could mine on indian lands.
the most famous being the sioux lands in the black hills, the us decided that miners should mine for the gold that had been found there by white trespassers, and that the indians should be butchered for not giving up the land they had been given by the treaty agreed to by the us government.

The only wars in the twentieth century formally declared by Congress were the two world wars. In the nineteenth, I haven't checked to be sure, but I think there were three: against Britain, Mexico, and Spain. Considering the far greater number of military excursions we've had, it's a remarkably small number.
