The universe is like a mirror.
Whatever we shine into it is reflected back at us so we can understand how it feels.
Sometime it feels good, sometimes it comes back and bites us on the a--.
If we show it fear, anger or hate this is what it sends back to us.
If we send it love, we get love back.
This is how we learn.
Love and blessings Don

In a roundabout way. In the same way that mass can convert to energy, we would expect Effort to directly translate into some form of Reward, too.
Karma can work, if you realize what you're doing and doing it effectively. But treating yourself badly and expecting a change for the better is too common. And unfruitful.
There was a biblical scripture which used to confuse me, talking about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. I don't think this applies very well where Karma is concerned. "The Lord helps those who help themselves" would be better here.
While you may believe that people do things for each other out of sheer good will and kindness, you must understand that most people wouldn't do those things if there wasn't some sort of direct reward in it for themselves.
Donating to charity ensures the donor a sense of usefulness and purpose, and if it didn't it would simply be a nuisance.

'How can these be harmonized with the concept of a righteous Creator?' they asked. They tried to resolve the conflict between God's righteousness and the unforeseen calamities and inequalities in the world. In time, they devised "the law of karma," the law of cause and effect—'whatever a man sows, that shall he reap.' They worked out a detailed 'balance sheet' whereby merits and demerits in one life are rewarded or punished in the next.
"Karma" simply means "action." A Hindu is said to have good karma if he conforms to social and religious norms and bad karma if he does not. His action, or karma, determines his future in each successive rebirth. "All men are born with a blueprint of character, mainly prepared by their actions in previous lives, though their physical traits are determined by heredity," says philosopher Nikhilananda. "A man is [thus] an architect of his own fate, the builder of his own destiny." The ultimate goal, however, is to be liberated from this cycle of transmigration and be united with Brahman—the ultimate reality. This, it is believed, is achieved by striving for socially acceptable behavior and special Hindu knowledge.
The teaching of reincarnation thus uses as its foundation the doctrine of the immortality of the soul and builds on it using the law of karma. Let us see what God's inspired Word, the Bible, has to say regarding these ideas.

Karma in Hinduism and Buddhism, for example, is the inescapable destiny resulting from acts in a previous life.
But answer number one 'reap what you sow' points out consequences of our actions. The effects of our actions and decision not because of some previous life.

in wicca and Paganism yes when we do whatever kind of karma to somebody that we will get it back threefold.not that i mean you will get it back three times in a row but meaning three times worse.i believe that this is in christianity also but not for sure though.but i am a wiccan and refer to call myself witch and i do spells and all but i do not harm others just because i have the power of magick and spells.i try to live my life as a good witch and try not to make others suffer in their lives.even if they do me wrong i still dont do them wrong.Because the threefold law of karma.whatever you send out into the universe will come back and u will get it worse.the fact that this is through not only through spells but also what u think inside of you can may also reflect your life.meaning like if you are thinking in your mind,"well i hate this person, and i wish that h/s would die."that there also is karma.hope this info helps you out.
blessed be,

Yes. You create your Karma with your actions. One action sets up another action.
