I have Nero SmartStart and it says " file is not compatible" whenever I try to open .avi video files onto the "Nero Digital Video Disk" selection... How can i make the files compatible OR what software would i need to get WITHOUT getting a free trial OR having to pay for that are .avi compatible? can you get me some names of those software IF there is no way to make .avi video files compatible with nero?

Use movie maker to convert your avi to DV-AVI. I've never used Nero but I'm sure it can open DV-AVI.

Avi files will only be acceptable on a computer, with the correct codecs, you can simply burn them as data to a data disk unless you actually want to make a DVD in which case you have to use that menu option.

Personally I would convert to DivX and get a DivX DVD player for under the TV, they are not expensive and it is then easy to transfer video from PC to TV.

usually when u try to open a avi file u will need codecs
these are the 2 that will most likely help u
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=66022&package_id=63808
download the ac3 filter.EXE

now u will be able to play pretty much all videos in your computer
i had this same problem with sonic
here is what i done to correct problem

i download all movies online using bitcomet
i have sonic mydvd plus
if u want to burn a avi video u have to have the 2 codecs i linked for u
then if u want to burn them.....burn them as data onto a disc using nero..sonic..ashampoo..something like that..(takes about 2 minutes)...if u want to format it from avi to DVD format...look for something called ....convertxtodvd...it will convert avi or divx files to dvd format to play in any dvd player..if u burn as a avi....u will need a DIVX DVD PLAYER to play on your home tv..u can get divx dvd players from walmart for 30.00......hopefully this helps u out some....if not..u can e-mail me or instant message me...i can send u ....sonic..nero 7..convertxtodvd....ill help u get it right if u need me to

Ok dude, dude chill... it'll be ok, lol no really chilax... ok to start off... Nero makes its own format of whatnot (it's close to quicktime video so it'll also work in quicktime ^_^) I think that Nuro only accepts mpeg-4... so go here http://www.download.com/Super-Fever-Link/3000-2194_4-10418057.html?tag=lst-0-1 and download this. it lets you encode anything to anything, just dont go messing around w/ the settings too much or you'll get a pixalated picture, it works for both audio and video and its free... no trial nothing FREE!!!! just encode it to Mpeg-4 or any other format that Nero could work w/ then use it, that simple ^_^
have fun

I would suggest using AVI2DVD because its free and probably the best tool out there: http://www.techroam.com/how-to-burn-avi-to-dvd/
